We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rishabh Dudhedia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rishabh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
As a cinematographer, I understand the vital role that breaks play in recharging creativity. While I do take vacations to explore and gain new perspectives, I ensure that my work continues smoothly through careful planning and delegation. My advice to fellow entrepreneurs, particularly those in creative fields, is to prioritize self-care and recognize the value of stepping back temporarily. Taking breaks not only rejuvenates but also fosters a deeper connection with one’s craft, leading to elevated artistic expression upon returning to work.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Transitioning from a science background in India, I ventured into the realm of filmmaking fueled by a passion for photography. My journey led me to discover the profound impact of storytelling through film. Armed with a Master of Fine Arts in Cinematography from the New York Film Academy, I am dedicated to crafting visually captivating narratives that resonate deeply with viewers.
My expertise lies in cinematography, where I seamlessly blend visuals with storytelling across various film projects. From serving as director of photography on multiple short films to collaborating with talented individuals, I approach each endeavor with a comprehensive understanding of the cinematographic process.
What distinguishes me is my unwavering focus on visual aesthetics, honed through formal education and hands-on experience. My resilience and determination are evident in my ability to overcome challenges, including starting a media team in college and navigating financial obstacles during my international education journey. I offer a unique blend of technical prowess and artistic insight. My work reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a fervent passion for crafting visual stories that resonate profoundly.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most fulfilling aspect of being an artist or creative individual lies in the profound connection forged with audiences through evoking emotions. As a cinematographer, I find immense gratification in crafting visual stories that resonate deeply, transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries. Seeing the tangible impact of my work, whether it’s in conveying a poignant message or eliciting specific emotions, is truly rewarding.
Moreover, the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the creative process adds a layer of constant growth and exploration to my journey. Each project presents a unique opportunity for discovery and innovation, making every step of the process both enriching and fulfilling. This continuous evolution fuels my passion for storytelling and drives me to push the boundaries of visual expression further with each endeavor.
In essence, the ability to connect with audiences on an emotional level and the endless potential for creative exploration are what make being an artist and cinematographer such a rewarding endeavor for me.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During my education journey at the New York Film Academy, I faced a significant test of resilience. Relocating to a new country brought its own set of challenges, from adjusting to cultural differences to grappling with unforeseen financial burdens.
Initially, I anticipated the standard expenses of tuition and living costs. However, I was blindsided by the additional financial responsibility of funding class assignments. Coming from a middle-class background in India, this unexpected financial strain weighed heavily on me.
Nevertheless, I refused to be deterred by these obstacles. Instead, I embraced them as opportunities for growth. I tirelessly sought solutions, explored alternative funding avenues, and persevered through the financial hardships. This experience taught me valuable lessons in resourcefulness, adaptability, and reinforced my unwavering dedication to pursuing my passion for cinematography.
Ultimately, overcoming these challenges not only contributed to my personal development but also highlighted the importance of resilience in navigating the dynamic and often unpredictable landscape of a career in the creative arts.
