Rio Michelle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?

I believe that women over the age of fifty, especially plus sized women, are made to feel invisible by societal double standards and the media. My goal is to empower other women over 50 and help them rediscover their sexuality and worth beyond the rules of just wife and mother.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

As an over 50 plus model, I am often alone on shoots with models in their twenties. The women I know personally, as well as professionally, often lament that they no longer feel vital, sexy or empowered. They often complain that they are dismissed by society once they are done raising their kids – that their identities suffer and they don’t know how to rekindle their lust for life. I want to rewrite the narrative that is not only size 2 ex supermodels who are sexy and thriving after 50. Women with curves, wrinkles, fine lines and Amazonian frames are hot and need to be acknowledged and celebrated!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

I honestly had to completely unlearn self-doubt and self-esteem issues brought on by being overweight for most of adulthood. I went from 330 pounds to 230 and realized that it wasn’t losing the weight that empowered me – it was finding out that my body wasn’t the only thing making me who I was. I am an exciting, vibrant woman with plenty to share with the world regardless of size or age and – in some ways – BECAUSE OF BOTH. We have to stop the rhetoric that beauty is a certain size, age or ethnicity.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

Seeing women come into their own at an age when they were ready to just coast thrive the rest of their lives is intoxicating. Inspiring them to go for those unrealized dreams, pursue the love interest they want and just grab life with both hands just never gets old.
