We recently connected with Rin Rudd and have shared our conversation below.
Rin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you manage your own social media?
From day 1 I’ve used social media to promote my business, and it’s been such a fun way to be creative with the content, while also showing off my products! What I think I’m really good at with my social media business is that I’ve turned my own personality into my brand. I knew if I wanted to successfully and consistently sell my rings, I wanted people to like ME as the business owner, as well as make quality products. So, I started on social media, and while I started out just promoting my rings, I eventually started sharing more and more personal information about myself, and really letting my personality shine through my brand, and I think that’s why I’ve been so successful with my business! I got people to like me as a person through my social media pages, therefore they want to support me!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Rin Rudd, I’m 23, a full time content creator, solo traveler, and spoon ring maker! I started my business Rings by Rin in December 2019 on Instagram. At the time it was really just a hobby and I would sell them to friends and family, but after about 6 months I decided to make a few videos about my rings on tiktok, and my first 3 videos about them went viral. I gained 15,000 followers overnight on my rings.by.rin Instagram page, and from that point on I knew I had to treat my little hobby as a business if I wanted to be successful. I found a friend from school to help me create a website, I found ways to scale up my business from selling 10-20 rings at a time to selling 500-1000 at a time, and the rest is history! I put a lot of effort into my social media pages and ever since that day when I blew up on tiktok, I have sold out every single ring drop consistently. I turned myself and my personality into a brand through social media, i create quality rings that last forever, and I think that’s why I’ve been so successful with it! Now, because I’m a full time traveler, I only do my rings drops once every 2-4 months when I come back to the states. But even though I’m not selling them constantly, I still sell out my drops every single time, I think because I’ve made my product seem scarce — they’re only ever available when I come back to the US, and my followers know that, so when I have a drop they know it’s their one chance to get a ring until 3 or 4 months later when I have another drop!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I started my ring business when I was in college. I’ve always been very crafty and always made myself jewelry growing up, and my spoon rings were just one of those crafts! But when friends and family saw what I had made, they told me I should try selling them! So, I started an Instagram page and sold them to people around my hometown and college town, but it was really just a side hustle at the time! I had no idea it would turn into my main source of income less than a year later. But after 6 months of starting my business and i started posting tiktoks of my rings and went viral immediately, my Instagram page grew from 4,000 to nearly 20,000 followers overnight and I had to really figure out how I could accommodate all of these new costumers, especially because I was handmaking these rings all by myself. So, I had a friend help me create my website, I updated my tools to make the ring making process quicker, and suddenly I was able to sell 500-1000 rings on my website in one drop, and I was able to make all of those rings in 10 days or less! It was overwhelming at first, but I figured it out!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started my business solely on Instagram, and it went well for the first few months, but I wasn’t able to reach as big of an audience as I wanted, so that’s when I switched over to tiktok. I had seen friends of mine make videos that had gone viral and gain them thousands of new followers, so I was like.. I bet I could do that too! And the first 3 videos I ever posted went viral and they were all based around my rings, and that really jump started my business! Tiktok is a very valuable resource for small business owners who are struggling to reach an audience. It’s much “easier” to go viral on tiktok rather than Instagram, as long as youre posting quality content that shows people something new and exciting !
