We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rowdy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rowdy below.
Hi Rowdy, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As far as music and performance go, I grew up in a pretty musical family, with deep roots in the birthplace of old time country and gospel music, Bristol, Tennessee. I was always involved in something musical whether it was school, church, or the garage, we were always strummin’ something. As I grew older and entered the work force, having a job was just a vehicle to be able to keep playing music, to buy the guitars, drums, and gear needed to write, perform, and record our rock and roll. Most places hiring didn’t like the erratic or inconsistent schedule a band kept, so you had to get creative and work for yourself, learn a skill or trade that you could always fall back on, always find a job site that would utilize your skillset. As much as I loved working with a guitar and a microphone, I had to become handy with a tape measure and a hammer as well. Time is your friend when it comes to learning anything, a promotion, a new skillset, a new talent, the benefits you reep from practicing to mastering are worth every second.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

From crew work, production, stage, teching, managing, all the way to The country music artist, Singer/Songwriter I am today. I love history, the heritage of which timeless and priceless things evolved from. Songwriting and country music are two of those pleasures. As a nod to our wonderful southern culture, I tagged on “Dixie Original” to the name. Basically Saying, after all the miles traveled and all the world I’ve been blessed to see, Im proud to profess that Dixie, is where I’m from, where I am, and is where I’ll stay. Hard work will always create opportunity, it’s just how long and how hard are you willing to go? If you are passionate about something, you have to do it, because that’s actual living.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
When business is good, all boats are rising with the tide, everyone is sharing in the upgrade and promotions, and it seems euphoric, that life is good. And it may be. But there tends to be a mistake made when profits and sales are up, that the gain is the good life. It can definitely promote and support a better way of life, but mentally and emotionally, while you may be settled for however long that moment is, eventually, you will need to create this whole celebration over again, to achieve that level of euphoria again. Passions work differently, whether you are a creative or not, the fiber of your being is hungry for movement. Your career or job can support you, and you can experience the highs and lows, with and without colleagues, by yourself even, but financial success will never pay the dividends that practicing your passions will. Don’t ignore yourself. Don’t belittle your dreams so you can focus on a bigger paycheck. Money can always be earned and lost, but a passion and a dream can always be captured, it’s always there, and it’s importance is up to your attention to it. and it will always be the gas, to fuel the drive needed everywhere else in your life. You can lose money, but you can never lose your passion.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Authenticity. Originality. In every genre of business, there is a niche that cannot be ignored, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If you cant keep it on the shelf, hell they must be doing something right. And then a model is made. An example is set. And then a very dangerous and irreversible thing happens. Clones. Copy and Paste culture. Now, it works, the world runs off of imitation being the greatest form of flattery. But we have convinced ourselves, within a creative rooted industry, that if it’s working, and business is good, that things should be molded into the likeness of what is successful. It’s so easy to Abandon the unique and specific assets of ourselves as individuals, we hang up what makes us all so different, beautiful, rare, timeless, and invaluable, by trading it in for an almost non existent chance to appear like the fame that someone or something else is. Don’t be fooled. Don’t waste your time being anxious about changing into something that someone else is. God made you perfectly unique, to share your very specific talents to the world. He needs you to be you, not Someone else. There is peace and life in your authenticity.
