We recently connected with Riley Paige Barnes and have shared our conversation below.
Riley Paige , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always sung when I was younger. I loved preforming for my family in the living room just making up my own song. I started singing lessons when I was 5 years old and still have the same vocal coach today. My first ever performance was at The Norco Fair when I was 6 and I sang “Somewhere over the Rainbow” I remember being really scared but once I got on stage, I new that this is what I want to do.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always loved to sing, and it was my favorite thing to do. I love to sing because it helps me express myself in many ways and people can connect to the music that I write so people don’t feel alone. I write songs with just me and my guitar and that’s one of my favorite things. That is what I love about songwriting.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I have had my struggles through out my singing career. I struggled with something I called “The Goat” which is when I didn’t breathe when I was in the middle of singing, and it would make my voice sound shaky, and I would sound like a goat. Overtime, I have learned to control this and control my breathing. I also have a new challenge for me, which is where my voice has been cracking due to growing up and being a teenager, but I’m learning to control it and making it sound amazing.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I love singing and songwriting, and I love my vocal coach, Billy Prunell. Singing is my favorite thing to do and I don’t know who I would be without it and if I could go back, I would give myself confidence and tell myself to just be me and to not be afraid. I feel like the journey I have coming for me is going to amazing and I just need to be me and to be confident for what’s coming.
