Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Riley Furey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Riley, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I originally started Kind of Consistent because I simply didn’t want to commit to any posting schedule that felt unrealistic to me. We’re coming up on three years of following that mantra, and I’m really happy to see the growth we’ve had while following a counter culture to the social media hustle mindset.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got into sharing my taste within music when I made a playlist called ‘mornings in new york city’ that now has 1,800+ likes close to four years ago, and then I realized I wanted to get deeper into this side of the industry through writing. Since making that decision, I’ve written for Complex’s Pigeons and Planes (810k), A1234 (137k), Fashionably Early (18.3k), and I write/edit for Sheesh Media (24.7k).
Admittedly, I started Kind of Consistent to give myself a platform to work on the skills to write at the places I mentioned above, and I had no intentions of building it into what it is today. At the time of writing we’re sitting just below 1.3k followers, we’ve sold over 1,000 pieces of merchandise, and on average we’ve brought out over 100 people per show we’ve thrown.
I still treat this as the main place for me to share my taste outside of my writing for other platforms, and it’s turned into a place for me to work on my dream projects with the artists that I really respect both locally and nationally.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s pretty ironic that this is the lesson that I had to unlearn when you reflect on the name of the brand, but honestly, it’s consistency. As creator’s we’re all conditioned to make our content purely for the algorithm, but I’m doing my best to create when it feels best for me and when I have a strong vision. I tend to feel the worst about posts I make when my idea’s feel half baked, and this next year I’m aiming to be more methodical on socials.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have a pretty unorthodox approach to social media marketing, and I say that because instead of prioritizing one channel more than another, I’m extremely open to using every channel I have at my disposal to spread the word of projects I’m working on. Whenever we have a show on the horizon I post about it across everything including Instagram (Personal and Brand), My Newsletter, Youtube, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Reddit, and anything else that can get eyes on it.
I know there are a lot of benefits to putting your focus into 1-2 places, which I still do with our Instagram and the Newsletter, but you’d be surprised at who you can reach by hitting the more abstract channels of social media.
Is there anything people should keep an eye out for from you and the brand in the near future?
Absolutely! Kind of Consistent just recently announced our annual anniversary show to celebrate three years since our first post, and we have three of the most exciting artists coming out of Ohio on the bill. The link to get tickets for that is here. (https://www.ticketweb.com/event/coastal-club-jordan-dean-liam-beachland-ballroom-tickets/13435213?pl=beachland)
On a personal note, I’ve really been committing to writing on my newsletter over the past couple years. I have some ideas under this platform that I think will really shake things up that are coming by the end of the year, and anyone can find that here.
