We were lucky to catch up with Riley Corbin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Riley, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Oftentimes in life a moment passes within the blink of an eye. Photography is the closet thing we have to traveling back in time- the closet we have to being able to look back at memory once lived. Photographs give us the opportunity to immerse ourselves into the phases of life we’ve grow out of- or even ones we may have missed out on. Photography allow us to re-experience milestones we’ve passed, accomplishments we’ve made, relationships we’ve developed. Life is a continuous cycle of growing, changing, and evolving. Photographs help to keep us from forgetting.
Riley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Midwestern girl- born & raised. Inspired by the vastness & creative opportunities that photography offers. Each face tells a story & photography allows those stories captured- forever frozen in time. Photographs give us the chance to hold on to something long after it’s gone. Truly magical.
Entering the world of photography was wildly intimidating- putting yourself in a position of vulnerability, voluntarily. Yet each session I find myself engulfed in emotion, thankful for another day of doing something I’m so passionate about- despite the moments of comparison and outside criticism. Feelings of inadequacy are far from abnormal and frankly those moments are what drive me to become better. To dig deeper into my talent as a photographer. To put new ideas out there, explore new concepts. Photographing others in life’s most intimate moments is nothing short of a privilege.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Achieving success in the photography business means allowing yourself to be vulnerable. You have to be willing to put yourself & your work out there. Despite the potential critiquing that could come with it, but typically- we are our own toughest critic. In order to grow in this industry, I’ve found a great deal of success in letter go of finding my “niche” and instead focusing on capturing each of my clients in a way that best represents them. It’s easy to get swept away by trends of other photographers, creating work that was inspired solely off their ideas- not your own. But what sets an artist apart from others- is creating something one of a kind- something real & authentic. Capturing people in their best light, not literally but metaphorically. Finding the little moments in each session, the genuine, gentle smiles in between poses, the giggles exchanged when they’re out of their comfort zone, the glow that radiates when their guard finally begins to come down. When I’m able to capture those moments- and show them to my clients, that’s what keeps them coming back. The authenticity that I aim to capture.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In order to grow as a photographer- you have to be willing to put yourself out there. Post your work. Promote yourself. Start small. In order to gain a clientele, you have to show off your talent. Allow potential clients to see what you’re capable of. The more work you’re putting out into the world, the more people you’re likely to reach. Allow your clientele to grow with you as an artist.
