We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rik Antgony a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rik thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was blessed to grow up in Chicagoland in the 60s and 70s. Radio stations like WLS and WCFL were ripe with radio talent. I knew with I was 12 that this was what I was meant to do. Right after graduation in 1978, I joined the United States Air Force to become a broadcaster for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFTRS). That got me started on a 44-year radio career that took me to North Carolina, Ohio, Colorado, Guam, California, Missouri, and finally back home in Indiana. Along the way, I worked in nearly every position in radio except sales.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was a radio announcer for most of my life. I’ve always felt comfortable behind a microphone, or on a stage talking with people. My radio career began with the Armed Force Radio & Television Service (AFRTS) in 1978 and I retired from my daily on-air radio job on 12/31/22. After my 20-year Air Force career, I began my 19-year career with the All Star Radio Network. While there I was the host of two national radio shows, a weekly music spotlight show called “Someone You Should Know” and a daily 90-second sports segment, supported by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) called “Back in the Pits with Rik Anthony.” I’ve had the honor of interviewing thousands of celebrities in the entertainment world.
In October 2022 I rebooted “Someone You Should Know” as a podcast. Since it began the podcast has been heard in over 80 countries around the world. It featured musicians, authors, and interesting people.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I was very blessed to be in the spotlight for decades. The goal of my ‘Someone You Should Know Podcast’ is to help others. Sadly the formulaic music industry has passed on some incredibly talented musicians and performers. This show is professionally researched, produced, and presented for musicians, authors, and interesting people to add to their websites, social media, and personal portfolios to help get their message out. Best of all this service is provided free of charge to the performer, author, and interesting guests. It’s my way of saying thank you for practicing their craft.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I always try to pay it forward and I get great pleasure hearing from my guests on how happy they were with the finished podcast. It’s my hope that someone who hears my show can help my guests achieve their goals.
