Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ridhi Bhalla. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ridhi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A risk I took was choosing filmmaking as a professional career and as a degree in undergrad. I wanted to go into journalism and become a travel photographer which I still love dearly but film was never my first choice. I love watching movies but not nearly as much as you would expect an aspiring filmmaker to. I am always running behind on my watchlist. I went to a very newly established film school. I was the first batch of students. Even though the university was well established, my school wasn’t. I am glad I took that risk as it has opened up the world of brilliant opportunities to learn and excel and become technically proficient in the art of photography and videography. I want to take these skills and direct films of my own and work for others as well to bring meaningful cinema into the world through documentary filmmaking.

Ridhi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I did my undergraduate degree in India as a bachelors in filmmaking. Now I’m a graduate student at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts ready to make my thesis film and graduate soon. I have always been passionate about photography since childhood and love to capture moments. I am a freelance cinematographer and open to assisting people on shoots.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about shotdeck sooner so that I could use it to refer to the shots I wish to be inspired from. Another would be actually talking to people and understanding how much people are actually willing to help you out if you are bold enough to ask.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to channel my energy and talent into creating my art and to be able to receive the same attention and appreciation from audience members. When they truly understand what you are trying to tell them is when I feel like I have achieved something extraordinary.
