We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ricshawn Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ricshawn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job
The lessons that I’ve learned at my past jobs was that communication is always key. It taught me to face all my fears behind or in front of clients. What I mean by that is that customer service jobs is the best experience that I’ve had. It taught me when to say no and when to appreciate clients and learn how to make clients happy. That’s why I always say communication is always key in any situation or business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well my name is Ricshawn Johnson. First I want to give thanks to my Lord Jesus Christ for given me this opportunity to share my experience in the hair industry. I want to thank my fiancé Brandon Gilliard Jr for standing beside and supporting my dreams. I am so so so thankful for my 6 beautiful children 2 girls and 4 boys.
In this industry, I am a salon and or mobile base braider meaning I do clients hair in shop or in the comfort of their own home. I’ve been in this industry off and on for the past 19 years. I am bless to own my own business and is able to share the love and bless those with my hands. I am in a process of graduating from Cosmetology School to obtain my license in hair. I will graduate clock hours in December of 2023. One other thing I am in a process of hiring 2 more mobile stylist and owning my space of business. I was so bless to hire an employee with great experience in this industry as well.
Well my business states that our mission as a braider is to provide our clients with the best experience with a one – on – one personal appointment. We hope that we build trust with our clients and ourselves with a level of professionalism that allows us to assess our clients needs and desires to produce the best and great outcome at the end of our services.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
What’s been the most effectiveness on growing my clientele is to never give up because there are people out looking at you to fail. All I can say just keep on praying and believing in yourself no matter what. You may lose some clients down the way and you’re going to gain way more than you lost. Just have faith!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What do I think that helped me build my reputation is to keep on going no matter what. And to keep on posting on social media because there’s always someone watching you and looking at your work. It can get a little bit stressful. But you’re in it to win it!
