We were lucky to catch up with Rico Blu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rico, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I realized I wanted to take the leap and push myself to be a great artist when I saw how reachable it was. Probably around when I was 19. Watching my peers do their thing and how much growth was coming from it inspired me to want to extend my narrative in all aspects, especially using my voice. I knew that if their music helped me get through certain times, I also could get through to someone who might’ve been in my same position. It’s all about the joy for me. If I can bring people joy with what brings me joy, I know I’ve done my intuitive and universal purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Rico Blu. I’m a 26 year old musician (rap/r&b/alternative/indie) out of Cleveland, Ohio. I started writing poetry and raps around the age of 12, while being involved in choirs and musical theatre throughout high school. I started taking my own music seriously when I was 19 in 2016, around the time The Life Of Pablo by Kanye West dropped and Blonde by Frank Ocean released. I really get my inspiration from Frank Ocean, Drake, & Jay-Z. I am a performer through and through because of my backgrounds so the shows I’ve done has always pulled in an amazing crowd, which is an absolute joy. What sets me apart from artist in this city is my charismatic nature of being my self at all time; I’m the same behind the mic, behind the screen, and in person. Authenticity is super important to me especially being in this industry atmosphere.
I rap my head off and can also lay therapeutic vocals on any track presented. Nothing is off of the table for me, I’ve even dabbled in Rock & EDM music as well.
Being who I am and being able to connect with people because of my music on the level I do for the fanbase I have currently is really grounding for me. I can only imagine the impact I will have when the rest of world is ready for me. I’m proud of all the music I make, knowing it’s healed me and has helped others is still surreal for me. I just recently dropped my most vulnerable work yet, DOMINO EP, and the response and love from that has been outstanding. I plan to have a lot more fun with the music going into 2023, with booking shows being a forefront so I can keep connecting with everyone who shows up and resonates. The world is going to know Rico Blu sooner rather than later. I plan to only keep spreading genuine love and visions of hope and bliss for my fans going into the new year, I plan on making a difference for someone; For myself.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is that my voice can create an escape for someone, how it does for me. We never know what someone is going through, so I always treat my music with the utmost focus to heal. Whether it be a deep emotional, introspective song or a banger to hang your head out the sunroof, I want it to be a difference for someone. Hearing the responses to the songs I’ve made and knowing it altered a perspective for that human, creates more room for me to do it all over again for someone else that’s listening. I know I’ve listened to album that have gotten me through my deepest moments, but to be able to do that for someone else from a deep moment of my own makes me want to move another mountain for myself.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Clapping For The Wrong Reasons, the short film by Childish Gambino. This film right here is what changed the way I viewed how I was handling my personal internal battles and with who I was keeping around; giving my energy to irrelevant situations, keeping myself in a loop. I was finally able to get out of certain loops and it opened up so many new worlds around me, and in myself most importantly. Anyone can benefit from that perspective in that film.
