We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ricky Mulet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ricky, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I got started with photography while in college going to school at Florida International University. I originally got into photos just by tagging along with my photographer friends at their gigs or casually taking photos with friends.
However, my photography journey really started when I began going to local shows in the Miami and Broward County areas. Originally going to these shows to support my friends in bands, I then started to bring my camera to these shows shooting all my friends concerts. Eventually it became a habit to always have my camera on me when I went to shows soon becoming known as a music photographer in the underground scene. From there I was able to build my portfolio which allowed more open doors to new experiences.
Now as a college graduate of both advertising and photography I’ve expanded to more than just music photography such as portraits, weddings, events, contemporary and short form video content creation for formats like TikTok and Reels.
I continue to pursue my passion with content creation and photography keeping myself open for more opportunities along the way!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Like previously mentioned I started specifically doing music photography working with many bands in the Miami music scene. I’ve worked on music video sets, bands promos and a countless amount of concerts.
Through doing concerts early on I’ve learned the art of working with different lightings and settings and having to get really creative to get the shots I desired in a very fast paced environment.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Over the years I’ve been influenced by many different content creators and Instagram photographers that have changed the way I think about my art/work. A couple big names for me include Peter McKinnon, Joe Greer, and Rory Kramer just to name a few.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Going out to events related to the type of work you want to do! Emails and DMs are also a great way to find clients. The keys to both of these methods is consistency! You got to show people that you are serious about your work and that’s when they will pay attention to what you are doing.
