We recently connected with Ricki Pickles and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ricki thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
As our business started growing we were consistently taking two cars to almost every delivery. My husband and I had mid-sized SUVs and every job was large enough to need all the space. Most weekends I would have to plan our schedule to accommodate time to drive all the way back home and reload. This was an unbelievable headache, waste of time and fuel. In fact, several times a year we would need to rent a uhaul for larger orders! So we finally bit the bullet and invested in a delivery van. We’ve named her Loona (Balloona) and gave her a complete overhaul including a full wrap and purple carpet!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My husband Jeff and I decided to start a business during Covid. Probably not the smartest move but it worked out well! With so many people having parties at home, we found clients wanted to provide something a little extra special for kids parties and that included balloons. We started with small gifts that we call candy cups and it really “blew” up into a full balloon decoration offering. We now have backdrops, marquee numbers and letters, additional items like flowers, ivy, Pampas grass, etc. Our focus is on providing superb quality and personalization. Of course balloons can be purchased on Amazon or box stores but we standout by using professional materials, thousands of color options and proper techniques. All of this provides our clients with peace of mind and extra time to work on other aspects of their event.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As our business continued to grow we had to decide what products we would offer. When we started out we offered candy cups and yard art. Again this was mostly due to covid and lack of gathering for parties. Once parties started again, clients and trends moved towards garlands and backdrops. We do our best to keep track of influences in the market and bring new trends to Lexington. We are very open to new ideas that are balloon adjacent so we can continue to stay relevant.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
We have not purchased a business but we have purchased a new home specifically for our business! While we loved our old home and location, it simply wasn’t big enough for our needs. Balloons take up an incredible amount of space so we had to decide if we wanted to rent a space for our business or buy a larger home. We went with the second option for many reasons and have only had minimal regrets since! Lol
