We recently connected with Rick Saffeels and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rick thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was an ambassador as a local professional athlete for 4 years and I had been making videos, taking photos, and posting a lot on social media. It was a fun hobby and I loved what I was doing. When a friend was talking to my wife and he said he “hated social media” and didn’t want to be on their at all. She said that he should hire me. After a brief talk, he hired me to be a presenter for his team for several months and then began to run his social media accounts. Word of mouth happened and I started gaining more clients as it was spring of 2020 and everyone was trying to learn how to get online. I was doing Zoom calls throughout the day and outdoor meet ups to help business owners share their stories. So I started to coach, train, mentor, do photos, videos, brand and logo design. If a business needed business cards, I would design them. If they needed a brochure, I created it. I started as a one stop-shop and grew quickly. I also realized I couldn’t do it alone so I starting collaborating with other service providers and outsourcing work that I couldn’t fulfill as well. Saffeels Social Media started going national and I have worked with clients across the US and helped sold products and materials all over the world.
In January of 2023, I started the Local Oregon Legacy Builders with the thought to help share the stories and events of small businesses specifically in the state of Oregon. My vision is to be an umbrella organization to help small businesses with anything they need by providing some of the best service providers in the state as referral partners and affiliate marketers.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started this business with zero dollars and within the first year it provided $10,000+ for our family. I had no overhead, no cost of goods, and the only expenses I had was my Google storage and URL domain fee. It was pretty incredible to see the amount of growth for the past 3 years as it has multiplied and grown. I knew going into running this business that I was not planning on being a millionaire or trying to have a exit plan. The goal has been to help build a legacy for the next generation.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth and monthly retention has been the best form of growing my clientele base. I know that it has not been perfect and that I have not been able to fulfill every clients’ needs, so I have learned from those mistakes and continued to partner with others businesses that can do the job better and usually faster.
