We recently connected with Rick Ryan and have shared our conversation below.
Rick, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success, to me, is about consistency in quality and an unwavering drive to improve, no matter the circumstances. I learned this lesson early on when I started my real estate photography business.
At the time, I didn’t have the most advanced equipment. My camera was decent, but I lacked the specialized tools many photographers rely on—like high-end lenses, lighting kits, or drones. Instead of letting that hold me back, I focused on making the most of what I had. I learned to work with natural light, honed my editing skills, and planned my shoots meticulously to ensure every image was sharp, bright, and professional.
One of my first clients was a realtor with a tight deadline. I remember showing up, nervous but determined, and using those limited resources to capture the property. When I delivered the final images, they were thrilled—and that positive feedback was all the validation I needed to know I was on the right track.
That experience taught me that tools and resources can improve over time, but what really matters is your ability to adapt, problem-solve, and deliver your best effort. As I grew, I reinvested in better equipment and expanded my services, but that foundation of consistency and determination has remained the same.
For me, success is a journey of making the best out of every situation and continually striving to do better, no matter where you start.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Rick Ryan, and my photography journey actually started by accident. I took a photography class at San Diego State University just to earn credit, but I quickly discovered my passion for the craft. What began as a simple class turned into a career, and I found my niche in real estate photography.
I specialize in capturing the essence of properties through photos, videos, drone shots, and 3D tours, with a particular focus on lighting techniques that bring out the best in every space. What sets me apart is my consistency in delivering high-quality images and my attention to the details that make each property stand out.
What I’m most proud of is how my business has grown over the years, along with the strong relationships I’ve built with clients who trust me to help present their properties in the best light.
When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll find me surfing, traveling, or hiking—exploring new places and experiences to stay inspired and bring fresh perspectives to my work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love working with different clients and locations, and being part of such a dynamic, creative field. It’s not just about photography—it’s about collaborating with agents, interior designers, architects, and many others to bring a shared vision to life. Each project offers something unique, and that’s what makes it so rewarding.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been delivering consistent, high-quality work and building strong relationships with clients. Word of mouth and repeat business have been key—when clients are happy with the results, they’re more likely to refer me to others. Additionally, networking with real estate agents, interior designers, and other industry professionals has helped me connect with new clients and expand my reach.
