We were lucky to catch up with Rick Na recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
In May of 2020 after COVID began we setup two events where we donated meals to be picked up by car in order to give back to the community and give them some resemblance of normalcy by means of having a restaurant meal. In those events we prepared 150-200 meal packages for 2-5 people. The community has been supportive to us so we wanted to give thanks back and throughout Covid they have been very supportive. We also partner with Carrollton and Farmer’s Branch PTA’s and ISD with food donations and gift cards for their auctions as well as offering Carrollton Farmer’s Branch ISD employees a discount when they visit. It’s always good to give back and be a part of the community.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The owners Rick Na, his husband Susan Na and Susan’s brother, Steven Kuy all grew up in New Orleans where their respective parents all ran their own restaurant businesses. We all graduated with different degrees ranging from Pharmacy, Business, and Political Science but we were drawn back to our roots and started a venture together. We wanted to have a restaurant that was more than a transactional service, such as a QSR will tend to lean towards. The restaurant we envisioned and are proud of is one that offers hospitality and experience and align with our Old Downtown Carrollton motto, “Where strangers become friends and friends become family.“ it’s important for us to be part of our community and know our neighbors. That being said we work the budgets of our local schools and non profits when they need a catering or donation.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth, being part of the school commmunity, non profit community, fellow business community has been a large help. Also SEO has helped drive traffic as well and physically we have signage facing a major highway that grants us visibility. We like to ask new faces how they have heard of us and those three have been the most popular responses.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
Like buying and selling a business you have to read everything and research! We have done both and believe that both parties should not only make a check list for administrative but also a check list for admin and regulatory requirements/goals so that each party feels clear their responsibilities and we have better knowing they can be set up for success.
