We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rick Hohn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rick , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have written my autobiography, More Than a Watchmaker. It is entitled this because a pediatrician who diagnosed me at two years of age with Cerebral Palsy told my parents that I would do everything besides making a watch. How true that has been with everything I do including being a consultant for Tobii DynaVox, an associate pastor for my church and an artist. This is despite uncontrollable limbs and hard to understand speech. You can order the book on my website at www.spiritwheelsministry.com. I established my own ministry called Spirit Wheels Ministry. It’s a Ministry Partner of Joni and Friends.
Rick , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Despite my severe limitations with Cerebral Palsy, I depend on God to do what I do. It is Devine appointments. For instance, a speech-language pathologist for the Tobii DynaVox manufacturer was told of the knowledge of my speaking device that I had. The pathologist hired me to be a consumer consultant that I did for 13 years before retiring in 2014. My retirement from the speech generated device manufacturer was after my pastor suffered a heart attack, and I filled in for him with sermons from my speaking device. This led into my becoming an associate pastor for the church. Another example is when my mother attached a paint brush to my head pointer when I was a teenager. I now paint landscapes and people with disabilities in awkward positions to tell a humorous side of a disability. I wrote about all of this In my autobiography. Also, I included tough times In my life. The book is guaranteed to make you laugh and cry.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would like the readers to know that they can do anything in life with God’s strength despite of challenges. They can be set free!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I can do anything in life despite challenges. They empower me.

I have known Rick a long time. He is a go-getter and not a quitter. He lives and breathes promoting the truth of God. His book tells the story of what the Lord can do with a life that yields to His unique plan for that life, and the joy that comes from it.
