We recently connected with Rick Hauschild and have shared our conversation below.
Rick, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After moving from Atlanta to Greenville, I realized that my life was lacking purpose and I was internally lost. I finally hit a very low point mentally and decided I needed someone to talk to. After a full year of seeing a mental health professional I gained some clarity. My “don’t take life so serious” mentality, creativity and past apparel experience led to How Are You? Brand. The goal is simple. Encouraging potential life altering conversations and awareness of the need for them. Every purchase gives back to the Greenville, SC community to help others!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
How Are You Brand’s journey starts with a broken human that was EXHAUSTED of hearing “… but he has so much potential.” After moving away from my home town of Acworth GA, I was having a hard time adjusting and finding myself in all the excitement/anxiety of a new place. I slowly realized I was not ok and made the most unmanly move I’d made in several years, I found a Mental Health Professional. Through many months of therapy I was able to come to peace with and confront some of the ankers that I had holding me in place. It was shortly after some big mental “A-HA!” moments I realized that my long past of helping people was not over. The goal became obvious. Make designs that encourage happiness and a look inward for improvement. We all need reminders that we are not alone in this great adventure we call life.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Motivation. We think “I’ll be ready to take the next step when X happens” or “If I could just have one situation present itself everything will fall into place.” Motivation does not equal action, it is the opposite. This lesson helped me with confidence, self worth and so much more. This perspective can take your life from just floating down a river to having a paddle and being in control.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was born and raised in Acworth, GA. Life there was comfortable and we all know that comfort is an enemy of growth. My wife and I both were feeling like growth was necessary so we decided to take a leap of faith and moved to Greenville, SC. We found jobs, new friends and fell in love with the city. After the excitement wore off for me, I feel right back into my old ways of self abuse and internal struggle of feeling worth anything at all. I was mentally still in Acworth. After about a year of therapy I figured out that I was not unworthy of happiness, I just had zero direction to point my energy to. As much as the goal of How Are You? Brand is to be a reminder to listen to yourself and others, it was a life saver for me. A true pivot in how I live my life and view myself.
