We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rick Cosgrove a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi RICK, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My family, in the early 90’s, and when I was a young man, experienced 4 deaths in a 9 month period that found the family in probate. The last Probate was my fault as I received bad advice from a Mortgage Lender. over a loan I was pressed for by a bank manager when I was a young buck learning the Banking industry as a Bank Teller.
Subsequently, I spent the next 27 years in that industry where I would see families with a Trust in place still end up in Probate. I made it my responsibility to assist families with the ownership of their accounts ensuring their assets would properly transfer to their loved ones without probate. A completely avoidable process!
As I advanced my career I diagnosed a major problem in the banking system that had the banks putting families in a probate position unbeknownst to the family by changes to the banking systems.
I interviewed 23 attorneys and subsequently many more to find out what they actually do to assist families avoid the process of probate. Come to find out, they don’t do the most crucial steps when it comes to avoiding the process.
I see Probate as a problem that can completely be avoided. It can cause financial hardship and a lot of avoidable stress.
I built Savon estate Planning to fill the gaps of the Attorney by creating a comprehensive customizable and affordable Estate Plan designed to actually help families avoid probate.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
To piggy back off of the first question I got into the business of Estate Planning in 2018 because I didn’t want families to experience what mine did as well as the families that were affected by the banking system during my 27 year banking career.
At Savon Estate Planning we focus on the transfer of assets after death. We create Trusts, Medical Directives, Power of Attorneys, & Wills. We do a complete and comprehensive asset review to ensure proper funding of the trust until all assets are positioned correctly.
Furthermore, the most important part of my business is the annual asset review we perform. Remember 27 years watching families end up in Probate with the documents in place.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I relocated to the Las Vegas Market the last week of September 2019. Just in time to relocate my businesses and licenses and take on a beautiful office that I built out. We took on the office on March 1st 2020 and by the 16th of that month we were shut down and i was considered non-essential.
I pivoted to social media and found a way to get my info out there through educational videos or lives. This lead to acquisition.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In the first year of my business I spent a lot of money on SEO form my website and other marketing. I got no return on my investment (ROI).
Today I spend absolutely no money on marketing. I do live videos on social media platforms, Interviews like this, and Seminars.
Next year I will be streaming live or doing a podcast from my Probate Killer platforms weekly.
