We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rick Canut a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents taught me to have a good work ethic. Show up, do your job to the best of your ability, and when necessary, go above and beyond. They showed me there is no shame in good hard work. At the very least, it will give you an appreciation of what people have to do day in and day out to put food on the table and pay the rent.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a Miami Based band with a heavy eclectic influence who have been making music for the past 30 years
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, at the end of the day I must write and create songs that are meaningful to me. I have been told many times over that I have a plethora of talent but, that I must modernize or get with the times when it comes to production or style. I have always disagreed. I relish the independence of being an artist. If I copy someone else’s style or dress and act according to the zeitgeist, I forget that independence. That will never make me happy or satisfied and therefore render my efforts as an artist moot. I like to make money from my art but, I don’t create art for the money. there is a difference and you should never sacrifice your independence for anything.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
society can support artists by stepping out of the proverbial safe space of the main stream and see what independent artists are doing . Give us a chance. If you don’t like it you can always return to what the main stream is pushing but, if you give independents a chance to prove themselves, you might be pleasantly surprised.
