Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Richie . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Richie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
What my parents did right? My father has always instilled in me the importance of independence and knowing that nothing is free in life. Not even a cup of water let him tell it lol and the importance of always being teachable and never being “too educated” to still learn and grow and attain new knowledge. What he did right was raise me to be fearless and independent. My mother has always been a free spirit who allows nothing to hold her down in anyway. If she sees something she wants to do or somewhere she needs to go she embarks on her path without a second thought about it. What I can say she did right is teaching me blind faith. Fearlessness and faith have been the foundations for my business I take more risks because I have faith in my capabilities and I’m not scared to fail or start over.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Richie I’m a hairstylist Im from Chicago,IL born and raised I relocated here to Atlanta in 2019 . I started to do hair in about 3rd grade I would do my dolls hair and then went on to do family and friends by 7th grade I was working as an assistant braider in a braiders suite Which is where I kind of got my first experience of doing hair professionally. Growing up I never wanted to be a hairstylist I wanted to be a defense attorney I literally never thought I’d be a hairstylist. Fortunately some gifts we are blessed with you just cannot shy away from or abandon. Years later here I am doing something I’ve always loved and was destined to be doing. I provide extension services, custom wigs, and coloring services I also sell my own brand of hot tools and lashes.. What sets me apart from others is just me, my personality, the great customer service I give not saying others don’t but I really look at my clients as my family and I put a lot of love into my artistry. I am most proud of my work overall there is nothing like seeing a client cry because you’ve made them feel beautiful or because you’ve gave them great customer service and they’re not use to that or even just being a listening ear while servicing them. I’d like future clients to know that I’m excited to have them in my chair and for them to have the Richie Porter experience and they can find my business page on instagram @Hairbyrichieporter
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Instagram! Instagram has been my best friend with building clients I hashtag all of my photos and also buy promotion that’s about how 80 percent of my clientele finds me. Also I find that getting out doing the ground work is also a great way to gain clientele I pass out cards and flyers or even just randomly talk to people to build that connection with them.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I honestly just started to post my pictures and videos of my work and follow other like minded individuals and interacted with them and people may see you in the comments of others and say “oh hey another stylist let me check them out to.” Staying consistent with content really makes a difference even if you’re not seeing the likes or engagement you would like to keep posting and continuing to hashtag and promoting your business no matter what the algorithm will start doing what it’s suppose to in no time. Also post clear straight to the point content and engage the audience.
