Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Richelle Marty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Richelle, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
My journey into how I started with Plump began unexpectedly when I decided to see my business partner for a Botox treatment at his old office. Little did I know that the guy that used to do my Botox would soon be my business partner. With my background in hospitality and previous ventures in health and wellness startups, I excelled in customer service and had an understanding of the industry. Despite being a newcomer to the medspa space, I was determined to leverage my skills and figure it out. We started our venture with just six employees, driven by our shared vision of delivering top-tier injectable treatments and addressing the growing demand in the medical spa sector. Over the next three years, fueled by determination and the surging demand in the industry, we scaled our business to a team of 35 dedicated employees over 7 locations.
Transitioning into the role of my own boss presented me with my biggest challenge – the need to learn as I went along. Unlike my previous experiences where I had mentors guiding me, I found myself in a position where there was no one to teach me anything. This steep learning curve pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I frequently had doubts that I wasn’t doing a good enough job. I had to quickly become an expert in areas I had little prior knowledge of, from medical procedures to business operations.
This path of self-discovery has a huge impact on how I lead and train my staff. I understand the value of empowering my team to be independent and able to solve problems. I encourage them to embrace challenges, knowing that it’s often through these experiences that growth comes. My relatability to their journey, as someone who understand self-learning and self-reliance, trickles down to the culture we’ve developed. I want my employees to not just follow the mundane day to day tasks, but to understand the “why” behind what they do for Plump, to take ownership of their roles, and to aspire to be their own bosses one day. It’s a culture of continuous learning, growth, and empowerment that I believe sets us apart from every other medspa practice.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
It’s crucial to prioritize investing in your employees. They are the backbone of the business. Show your appreciation regularly, offer training opportunities, and encourage their growth within the company. Communicate clearly and have goals that are attainable. Recognize and celebrate their achievements, big or small, and create a work environment that promotes work-life balance. Regular feedback, both constructive and appreciative, reinforces their value, ultimately enhancing their motivation and dedication to your business and its success.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn being excessively hard on myself and learning to delegate to others effectively. I used to believe that I needed to handle everything on my own to ensure perfection. This mindset often led to burnout and limited my own growth. The tipping point came when I found myself overwhelmed and struggling to manage my workload. It became clear that I needed to trust my team and push responsibilities to them. It was a challenging, as I had to relinquish control and accept that others could and were perfectly capable of getting tasks done. Over time, I learned that delegating tasks not only reduced my stress but also allowed my team to excel in their roles. This shift in mindset transformed my leadership style for the better.
