We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Richard Tiland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Richard thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
When I started out in video production I still had a full time job in sales and marketing. I remember my mentor telling me that if I could not fully pay my bills with my video income, I should not quit my day job. So over the next several years I worked at my day job and also on building my agency, often at the expense of 14-16 hour days. Then one fateful day, my income in the video company caught up to my expenses and I quit working for corporate America. Now, I run a successful video production agency full time and invest in other creative ideas I have within this relm and I am happy!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always had a passion for video. Even as a kid folks were always asking me to take the camera out of their face! As I grew, I realized this was my calling. But I had no idea how big a medium video would become. Over the years, as I watched video grow I grew with it. I learned not only the skills required for making a high quality video, but the marketing techniques needed to bring in the best results.
I also enjoy a unique work relationship with my clients because I listen carefully to their expectations and concerns. That why so many of our clients return again and again. Major clients like ESPN, NuVasive, Hyundai, Sony, UC San Diego, SolarGard and iLife.
New Evolution Video also works internationally with clients in a dozen different countries. The kind of the services we provide are diverse. We plan marketing and sales goals and how video will drive growth in these channels.
We can ensure maximum value and frequent video content to coincide with content schedules. Help with goal and objective planning for digital marketing integration to include videos. Refine promotions, features and benefits to reflect on- brand messaging that brings results with videos.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I borrowed $5,000 from my grandparents and had to pay it back with 5% interest.
