We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Richard Tichelman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Richard below.
Richard, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I am currently in the midst of what’s been my most meaningful project yet. It all started about 4 years ago. I had just signed with with my manager at the time, she came into the picture and brought me into lots of writing sessions, and as you’d believe it we soon had an album. it came together swiftly and was indicative of my head at the time. We planned our first single and BOOM Covid…. like that we were derailed. This project has seen me through a lot of growth, Physically, mentally, and emotionally. I write more often because of it. I also feel like it has helped me find my voice and understanding of what it is I want musically. I’m excited to share more after its release.
Richard, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started singing and playing at age Eight, and by age 14 I felt confident enough to try busking, It wasn’t long before I realized that I could make a small little business out of it. I am now 23 and since then I’ve always had music as my primary, playing gigs, writing, and teaching, I’ll pickup odd jobs when needed. but music has always been in my crosshairs. I feel like I can truly make an impact with it, more so with music than with anything else I’ve done or tried in life. I love the fact that through practice and persistence I have gained the ability to feel comfortable in front of a crowd. Not only that but to be able to help people escape, listen, groove, jive, all of the above. Music feels good, and I aim to help people feel good with my music.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I unlearned over the past few years was “There are wrong answers”. I mean yeah, for sure there are, but sometimes grammar goes out the window and a great lyric takes its place. Because of the mental shift, I’ve become not so shy around my ideas while writing these days. I feel less embarrassed when voicing and establishing my ideas. I’ve noticed the more I acknowledge the ones that cross my path, the more they start to come my way. Not every idea is great or a hit, but who cares. I’m writing, I’m learning, I’m growing and I just wrote a line, now doesn’t that feel better than having not done it al all?
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of be best feelings I can get from my music is sharing my songs with people, and having somebody connect with it. The ability to share my stories, feelings, and energy with those around me is something I am grateful for. I love that I can help people let loose or open up with just one simple song. Now selfishly this also has helped me become more in tune with what the heck it is I am feeling, what made me feel that way, and what am I going to say about it.
