Hi Richard, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

My name is Richard Porche, CEO/Founder of Righteous People Worldwide Academy Sports. I grew up in New Orleans LA and at a very young age I experienced a lot of trauma. Gangs, drugs, and violence seemed to consume my entire life bringing about depression, confusion, anger, and identity crisis. I pushed my self through high school and College fighting against my past! In 2016 I started to Coach high school sports, but year in and year out I would ignore my past trauma trying to change the life of young men and women never feeling fulfilled. Fast forward to 2020 I began working as a PE teacher at a social economic disadvantage Elementary School. Majority of the children there had a one parent household, no father or mother, homeless, no food or even shelter sometimes. It’s safe to say I saw myself in them and I knew that if I didn’t take action they would grow up in survivor mode like I did! Sports saved my life and I feel like if any child can have just one person in their life that believes in them and holds them accountable they will move mountains. Therefore, in 2021 I became that person for my young athletes I started with 50 athletes and because of Gods grace and Mercy I currently have over 600 athletes and 2 schools enrolled in my program.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Righteous People Worldwide Academy Sports is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit organization dedicated to children in low income communities. We are a youth sports program located in Fort Worth, Tx. We provide sports such as soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, dance, cheer, and step for grades K-5th grade and cheer for 6th-9th grades. Our aim is to inspire positive change and personal growth in every young athlete in we engage.

We take pride in the change our athletes have from the start of a sport compared to the end of it. Their growth academically, mentally, physically, emotionally and even spiritually creates a more confident, self secure individual that is ready to take on any task given to them through faith, guidance, trust and hard work.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I started this program while driving 1 hour and 20 minutes, sometimes up to 2 hours because of traffic one way to work everyday. During that time I was also working towards obtaining my masters degree while being the best father I could be to my 4 children and husband to my beautiful wife. Times were so hard for my family and I, but when God gives you a vision you have to chase after it with your whole heart. A lot of sacrifices have to be made, and you have to have faith and trust that it’s all going to work out at the end. It won’t be easy, but it will always be worth it.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

My first year running the organization I felt as if I had to help everyone, there was so many kids that “couldn’t “ pay to be apart of my organization and by the end of the season I had paid about 2,000 worth of fees for athletes!
One weekend I wanted to better my organization so I set out to check out different organizations in the area. I spoke to different directors and also went to some games. I saw a lot of my athletes playing for other organizations outside of mine that charged more than double and also did less for the athletes. I realized that I was being taken advantage of and had to learn quickly that my program isn’t for everyone and also that I can’t help everyone.
