We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Richard Parrott IV a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Richard , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started Global Money World to create a safe space for artists where talent came first. Back in 2017 I was still a music artist dying to make it in the industry and felt like I didn’t have a place, so I created that space.
I started off just as a distributor releasing monthly music from artists I enjoyed, then that turned into managing artists, which really taught me how to build an artist, as well as what it took to truly make it but my big moment happened when my brother Michael told me to start doing music reviews on artists.
Within a year things took off quick to the point I’m working with major labels and companies which was a dream come true due to my past as an artist. It opened up a lot of doors with the biggest being me getting into the Recording Academy for the Grammys and Latin Grammys
Richard , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been a big fan of music since childhood and by the time I hit my senior in high school I knew I wanted to be in the music industry. I started off wanting to be a producer but it was a tough finding artists to use my music, so then I started rapping which helped me learn so much, and made me want a record deal. Once that didn’t work out I started my own company just to not give up and stay close to the music, which was very important to me.
I feel the biggest difference between me and most in the industry is I have genuine care for artists. I know the grind first hand and I carry that with me in everything I do, and it keeps me humble.
The thing I’m most proud of is taking my mom to the Grammys. I remember being 18 dreaming of doing it and to finally do it at 32 validated my feelings of how great I was
Have you ever had to pivot?
My journey has been filled with pivots but I must say the pivot that makes me feel the best is my pivot as a basketball coach. I’ve always had the dream of coaching and I got the opportunity to coach boys and girls basketball at City Middle/ High.
It felt the same as music management but in a more competitive way, which spoke to my spirit. It gave me a fresh spark, while also showing me the importance of making a difference in your community and doing some good while we’re here on this earth.
My girls team won the GRPS championship and also went undefeated, which led me to start my own AAU club, Global Basketball Academy
Any advice for managing a team?
The advice I have is empower the people around you. When leading a team it’s not so much about telling people what to do, but helping them identify what they’re good at and amplifying that to make them the best version of themselves they can be
