We recently connected with Richard Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Richard, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission behind Richard Readings LLC is to bridge the gap between therapy and psychological based resources and spirituality with a holistic based understanding of mental health. Although our society tries to tell us that there are just a few ways of feeling and understanding, no one truly fits inside a box. Some resources that are offered by clinical psychologists and therapists are not connected to the belief systems or inner feelings of many people in this world. Especially during a time in the world where there are so many changes and advancement to the way that we understand ourselves and our place within the world, people are looking for answers and pathways to better understand themselves and the world around them. I myself, was one of those people who always saw the world through a different lens than my peers around me and did not find the typical language of understanding helpful since a young age. I was always able to see things that others could not see and understand deeper meaning through pathways that were not obvious or understood by the status quo around me. Because of this I created Richard Readings with the intention of creating a space where I could apply the way that I saw and understood the world in a helpful and generative way that could help me to use my understanding of the non-physical world in a beneficial way. Many people are seeking understanding and are open and willing to learn new ways to see the intricacies of their lives and I aim to give them one pathway of understanding to do so.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a natural born “seer, and what some may call “medium” or “psychic.” I have memories of interactions with “spirits” from as early as my memory begins and having a clear window into other people in ways that most do not. This obviously made me different and outcast throughout much of my life. I remember sharing my experiences as a child and being mocked and called a liar by the other children that I was sharing with and this was one of the first times I truly realized that I was different. Over time this skill developed in me into something that became quite instrumental in many of the decisions and opportunities that I had in my life and I started to realize that I was able to apply this internal guidance system to other people as a way to help them make more informed decisions based upon the non-physical and energetic input that I was able to tap into. Through my business, Richard Readings, I provide Energy and Tarot Readings from Career, Love and Health to Mediumship of passed on loved ones and Past Life Cycles. I have been able to enrich many people’s understandings of themselves through these readings and have been shocked by the outpouring of support that I have had through it. What I am most proud of is the way that I have helped other intuitive people , especially women, to apply their own talents in the healing space to grow their own businesses and break free of generational chains. These women are now leading successful businesses for themselves and are creating spaces and passing along their gifts to others through their work.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One huge lesson I have had to unlearn is in regards to the work/life balance that most Americans experience. Through this business I have learned so much about my own energetic resources and the importance of sustaining them. Most people, at least in the Western World, have very little understanding of how their energy flows on a day to day basis because their attention is completely focused on their work lives. This is something that you cannot do when you are working closely with energy. You have to take breaks and you have to have strong energetic boundaries as well as find ways to detach yourself from the lives of the people that you are helping. You cannot immerse yourself in the same way you would a 9 to 5 job. This is something that I struggled with at first and then over time learned that breaks were important. I also cannot help others if I cannot help myself. I have to put my energy first in this line of work, even though I am attempting to help people with the processes that they are dealing with in their own life. Because of this, I believe there is no way to live a traditional capitalist lifestyle while still doing this work. The two spheres have a hard time overlapping because the time and energy that you are giving to the people that you are working with is not quantifiable in the same way that you would other jobs. This work is not necessarily even a “job,” but more so an act of service to others.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
When I started Richard Readings, it was not my intention for it to become a full-time career. I was living in New York City and I was trying to find ways to make money and I had always been told that I should try to work with tarot and energy readings with clients. During my time there I started with friends and family and then made a website. After this the way that the business took off was so rapid and unexpected that I was immediately fully booked and busy. In the beginning, I had my schedule set up to work 5 days a week, but it became obvious very quickly that the energy required to do this work as well as the amount of interest that was being expressed was not feasible and I had to up my prices and drop my hours to account for the level of time and energy that I was giving to it. This quickly became my main focus and I actually ended up walking away from my previous job so that I could focus on owning and operating a business full time.
