Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
In the world of business, even the most meticulously planned ventures can face unexpected challenges. At Richard Merrill Consulting, we’ve always prided ourselves on our ability to adapt and overcome obstacles. However, in 2023, we faced a crisis that nearly brought our entire operation to its knees.
It all began with an ambitious vision: The Complete Spa Business Retreat. This event was meant to be the crowning jewel of our educational initiatives, bringing together graduates of our Complete Spa Business Regimen with industry luminaries. We envisioned a four-day extravaganza of knowledge-sharing, networking, and inspiration, featuring insights from top lawyers, CPAs, and CEOs who had successfully scaled their businesses.
As the event drew near, excitement was building. We had 157 registered attendees, a lineup of exceptional speakers, and a carefully crafted program. But then, disaster struck – and it struck hard.
First, several of our keynote speakers fell ill with COVID-19. Then, as if that wasn’t challenging enough, one of our crucial presenters had to undergo emergency spinal surgery. The final blow came when multiple staff members experienced personal medical emergencies, landing them in the hospital.
We found ourselves at a crossroads. Canceling or postponing the event seemed like admitting defeat, something that goes against the very core of what we teach our clients. So, we made a bold decision: we would transition the entire event to a virtual format.
It was a herculean task. Our team worked around the clock, reimagining presentations, coordinating with speakers, and setting up robust online platforms. We were determined to deliver value, no matter the circumstances.
The virtual event went ahead, and for the most part, it was a success. The majority of our attendees appreciated our adaptability and the wealth of knowledge shared. However, three attendees were deeply dissatisfied with the change and filed chargebacks.
Those three chargebacks might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but for a small business like ours, they were devastating. The financial hit crippled Richard Merrill Consulting well into the spring of 2024. We found ourselves in a precarious position, struggling to meet payroll and keep our operations afloat.
This period tested every ounce of resilience and business acumen we possessed. We had to make tough decisions, streamline our operations, and lean heavily on the support of our loyal community. It was a humbling experience that reminded us of the very challenges many of our clients face.
But here’s the thing about near-death experiences in business – they either break you or make you stronger. For us, it was the latter.
As we navigated through this turbulent period, we didn’t just survive; we evolved. We took the lessons learned from this experience and channeled them into innovation and growth. The result? The Complete Spa Business Summit for 2025.
This new initiative represents not just a comeback, but a leap forward. It’s open to all, broadening our reach and impact.
