We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Richard Good a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Richard, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Everyone has crazy stuff happen to them, but often small business owners and creatives, artists and others who are doing something off the beaten path are often hit with things (positive or negative) that are so out there, so unpredictable and unexpected. Can you share a crazy story from your journey?
One of the defining moments, for me starting my business was how i met some of my first clients while working in the media field. Let’s just say i have had the privilege to work for some well known companies. And while working for these companies i had the opportunity to meet some great people, who became my first clients. In the past i have held the position of Audio Producer for several different radio stations. Two radio stations in particular, i served in that role for 2+ years. As producer my responsibility would be to assist radio hosts with their show. Such as helping them book guests, prepare audio for their program, and edit audio. While working at these stations i felt that i had enough experience to create my own radio platform. It takes confidence to make such a bold decision, but I felt that God willed me to do so. As I prepared to leave the entertainment industry as an employee, and set out to create my own radio station and media business, something happened.! I let all of the clients that i produced for know that i would be leaving, and what i would be doing. To my surprise these clients where interested in joining me on this journey. Two of the clients that i produced shows, on mainstream radio decided to leave those stations and become my clients. Very rare does this happen, considering the circumstances, but i attribute their decision on our business relationship. Another one of my clients sought my guidance in helping them create their own radio platform, which is still successfully operating today. Those other two clients who joined me are still my clients today 3 yrs later. This was a very pivotal moment in my career, because i was given the ultimate confidence, and reassurance that i’m doing what God called me to do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Media is something I became interested in while in high school. I was an athlete, so my first love was sports basketball & football i played all year round. I wasn’t as interested in academics but i did what i was supposed to in the classroom. My media classes sparked my interest more than anything, and kept my attention through my early years. That interest in media lead to me interning at radio stations, shooting and editing videos while in college. Every moment i had i would be either in the radio station learning a new skill or i would be trying to record something with my camera. As i learned a new skill i would go practice what i learned. For example my first paid opportunity in media was when i got the opportunity to shoot video for the campus women’s volleyball team. Then that work was published on the schools website. After this i became sought after by different sports such as the football, tennis, and track teams. I traveled with these teams to opposing games in different cities. This is what first planted the seeds of entrepreneurship in my mind, and what eventually helped me create my media company Earned Not Given Entertainment.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Initially i would use whatever money i would get my hands on to buy equipment. Before i purchased a studio for my media company, i purchased everything i needed one at a time until i had everything i needed.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to do what i love everyday on my terms without compromise, having full control of my time. I want to create a Global brand that will be in multiple cities, and countries to provide opportunities for millions of people of color.
