We recently connected with Richard Gillins and have shared our conversation below.
Richard, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path from my days in high school. I was always into art and creating. I used to draw a lot, like cartoons and graffiti art. Junior year I got more into DJ’ing and music. A couple of my friends were DJ’s and I hung out with them a lot messing around on their turntables until I bought my first set and then the rest is history.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the radio industry / DJ’ing industry through my uncles. One of my uncles over heard me one day just jamming in my bedroom practicing my mixing techniques. He then phoned another uncle of mine who produced a radio show every Sunday on the local radio station in the city I lived in. One day he invited me to come to the station as a guest DJ and after a few guest visits I became a staple on his show, playing every Sunday and even getting my own hour segment on his show. That’s when I knew I had a passion for music and radio. That carried on to college where I became music director for my college station and started to do events for my school and local clubs and lounges. I provide DJ services, I also create event flyers, logos, graphic tees, promo images, you name it. I also have an event coordination / event promotion team and a blog.
My brand is all about being true to self and exploring your creative side. I am known for my radio shows and the quality and vibe that I provide whenever I play.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Having my strokes in 2020. I spent 2 weeks in coma and 3 months in medical care. Toughest time in my life. Just learning how to walk, and talk again was very trying especially while doing it alone and not able to see family and friends.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Bringing joy and happiness to others through music and art.
