Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Richa Mittal MD . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Richa, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
After I had my first child, I resumed work as a hospital-based physician. Although I had done such work before, this time was different. Seeing people come in repeatedly to the hospital with lifestyle related chronic diseases, along with my own professional burnout, I became interested in the preventive side of medicine. I realized my calling was to not only shift my professional focus to disease prevention, but also to educate and inspire! This led me to eventually deviate from the traditional medical practice model to create a unique practice model that puts the patient in the center of a holistic treatment plan that allows me to work with them over time to learn and use lifestyle tools to help prevent and reverse many chronic medical issues.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a direct care membership practice and physician, I have the privilege of working with people over time, offer longer visits and provide ongoing access between visits to coach and provide support and accountability. By offering preventive health services like a 360 Wellness visit, I provide an in-depth preventive health physical and counseling experience open to anyone looking for a prevention plan. The personalized medical weight management program Your Journey, Your Way offers an evidence based and lifestyle-focused solution that addresses the whole person. Health is defined in different ways for different people based on their evaluation, but always in line with what a person envisions for themselves to be optimal. I love to work with people to personalize an approach that is sustainable. People forget the importance of that aspect of a treatment plan. This includes culturally sensitive counseling around food & habits, culinary coaching to be able to modify recipes and still enjoy foods, health coaching and motivational interviewing around mindset and habits, and the use of evidence based treatments.
Along the way, I have found my voice and passion for educating around the importance of foods and lifestyle when it comes to longevity and disease prevention. That has led me to grow a social media platform, give lectures to community and professional audiences and work on innovative programs within culinary medicine to help not only my patients but my community at large. Looking forward to future projects and more ways to spread the word!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think it’s important to be a good listener. I mean, to really listen, process and absorb what patients are saying. This not only helps one connect and create trust, but also helps our patients not feel alone in their struggles. We also learn from them all the time! Being empathetic, not being judgmental and understanding that we can help people find their own motivation to change is very helpful too.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Starting my practice from scratch, not having a built in network being new in the area as well as choosing to adopt a unique practice model were challenges I not only faced in the beginning, but also every day in the past 3 years. I had to face the self-doubt and that voice that questioned me on days when it seemed like I hadn’t had a new patient join my practice in a while. On those days, I had to tell myself and really believe I had something of value to offer that kept me going, that kept me trying. For anyone who is an entrepreneur or creating their own path, you know it’s not always easy!
