We recently connected with Ricco Cooper and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ricco, thanks for joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Growing up, my father and grandparents made sure that I had proper manners, and spoke well.
They insisted that I never end a sentence with out saying “please” or “thank you”. My father also made sure I always replied to adults by saying “yes ma’am” or “no ma’am”, “yes sir” or “no sir”.
My father would often state that manners will take me far.
To this very day, I have benefited because of my speaking abilities. I have have delivered sermons in church, been on discussion panels for the University of Virginia in 2020, and the Black Wall Street convention in 2021.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started out as a typical brand ambassador various products. Through time, I decided to specifically my focus towards wine. I begin to take courses and become certified in many different countries and regions for wine.
Once I begin the process of trying to master my craft, people here to ask me my opinion on wine and which was best for them. As a wine sales consultant, I help people select the perfect Wines for whatever their occasion. I do so in a way that is both honest and backed by research.
I have lately begun my studies for bourbon, whiskey, and tequila.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As an entrepreneur you must not settle for NO simply because no means NO money, no means NO resources, no means NO venue, no means NO opportunity, no means NO food, NO is way more serious as an entrepreneur! You must always work yourself out of accepting NO as a response.
How are you ask?? I’ll tell you.
(1) Embraces the idea of RELATIONSHIPS (By building the right relationships allows you access to opportunities, people and things otherwise you would not have)
(2). BUILD UP CAPITAL( I continue to work my 9-5 to pay my bills. I also choose gigs related to my field I.e. server, brand ambassador, bartender etc. In order to save up capital to fund my business. This allows me to have the power to purchase things that would benefit my company or vision, rather than waiting for a bank or someone to tell me NO or limit me)
(3) DO THE WORK
As long as you are able bodied and find yourself time, do it your self! You may not understand at first but that’s why we have library’s, mentors, Google, and YouTube, Plain old fashion books, plenty of resources.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I Benefit heavily by having good counsel. You must also keep good counsel. You will be surprised how many negative thoughts from. When the business is slow and when things do not go well; we must fight the good fight. You may not always have an automatic knockout like Mike Tyson. But fighting builds your character, it allows you to see what you’re made of. If you fail allows reflect on what you could have done differently.
