We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Richy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ricardo below.
Richy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first knew that I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path when I started getting a bunch of compliments on my beats. What really made me realize I was actually good and made me want to do this professionally was when a artist that I used to listen to actually liked my beats and asked me to send him some. That’s when I really said “hold up ima take this music serious”.
Ricardo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those of you who don’t know, I’m a music producer/audio engineer based in Los Angeles. The way I got into music production is a bit weird but I was always interested in music and I think one of the reasons why I love it so much is because my dad would always have music playing around the house when I was a kid.
The music would range from The Eagles to Rock en Español so he would have all kinds of music genres playing.
Fast forward a couple of years later this video game called DJ Hero came out and that game is what really made me want to do music. I was playing it one day and I told myself “you know what, I wanna get an actual turntable and do my own mixes. Sooner or later, I’m at BestBuy with my dad and we get a turntable. Nothing crazy just a basic one for like $100 bucks or something. I get home, set it up, then I imported some songs into my laptop and started messing around with the knobs and stuff not knowing what I’m doing. So I was doing that for a couple of months, nothing serious and then I said “Alright, this is cool and all but now I wanna make my own beats”. So fast forward a month later I was at my friend’s house with a couple of other friends one day and we were talking about how I wanted to start making beats and one of my good friends recommended me FL Studio. So he helped me load it into my laptop and I started making beats. They were not the best at all but I practiced every single day and watched tutorials on YouTube.
From 2014 to now I’ve made at least one beat every single day. Doing that really helped me become a better producer for sure. After producing for a couple years I then wanted to learn how to engineer. I watched countless of videos on how to record somebody and mix vocals and after taking some notes and practicing, I finally got the hang of it. I started to record my friends and with time my mixes got better and better. I always used to watch other engineers mix through YouTube or Instagram and id follow their engineering process but over time I started to do my own little tweaks and found other techniques that worked best for me. Fast forward to now I produce, mix, and master for my friends/artist and upload our music to my Spotify. I starting releasing music this year and I’m looking forward to showing the world our music. My main goal is to make timeless music. Music that’ll live forever and impact people in a positive way. Music that’ll bring people good memories when they hear our song. That’s what I’m all about and that’s what I want to give the world.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I feel like people don’t understand how hard it is to be in this field where artist for example have to be really vulnerable on the song and for an artist to release a song like that can take a lot. We have our days where we’re not feeling creative enough or we feel lost sometimes but we just push through it. Its always a good idea to take little breaks on yourself.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to not only make timeless music but to retire my parents for sure. I want to give them the best life they could possibly live. They’ve worked since they were 13 years old and I really wanna just give them the lifestyle they want and have that security with no stress or worries.
