Brands like Fubu, Rocawear, Sean John, and Iceberg were the go-to clothing for kids our age, but unfortunately, I wasn’t fortunate enough to afford them.
As we talked, a wave of nostalgia washed over me, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep desire to create something that would resonate with people like us—those who had a passion for fashion, music, art and creativity but may not have had the means to express themselves through those channels.
In that moment, a spark ignited within me, and I made a promise to myself that I would one day own my own clothing brand. It was a devastating blow, as I had already built up anticipation and excitement among potential customers and supporters.
In that moment, I was faced with a critical decision. I could either succumb to disappointment, delay the launch, and potentially lose momentum and interest, or I could tap into my resilience and find a solution. I chose the latter.
I immediately began researching alternative manufacturing options, reaching out to different suppliers, and exploring every possible avenue to make the launch happen as planned. It was a race against time, and the pressure was immense, but I refused to let this setback define the fate of APULU.
Through sheer determination and countless hours of effort, I managed to find a new manufacturing partner who shared my vision and understood the urgency of the situation. Working tirelessly, we expedited the production process, often working late into the night to ensure the quality and craftsmanship of the products.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

With limited financial resources, I decided to allocate 10% of my paycheck towards funding my business.
Every month, as I received my paycheck, I diligently set aside a portion of it to save for APULU. This required discipline and sacrifice, as I had to tighten my personal budget and make conscious choices to allocate funds towards my business instead of indulging in immediate gratification.
Looking back, I am proud of the fact that I was able to bootstrap my business and bring APULU to life through my own dedication and commitment. Starting with just 10% of my paycheck, I proved that with determination, creativity, and strategic financial management, it is possible to build something from the ground up, even with limited resources.
