We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Riacrdo Sanchez Jr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Riacrdo below.
Hi Riacrdo, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
This is a hard question I get asked frequently and the answer is no. No, because I would not have been ready to journey off on my own. My early twenty’s where met with I know everything, and I don’t know crap. Which translates to I have the all confidence but none of the skills to back it up. After Many humbling experiences after many failed business ideas I finally made an effort to ask people for help. Thats when things started to turn around for me, but could not have happened any other way. I learned while working a full time job to keep my bills paid really helped with getting my now business up and running. When it was finally time to go full time, it was right, it had to be because I was responsible to people.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Tierra Oso, the company I started that was born from the simple question Ive always asked “how can I help?” Ive worked with small businesses all my life as Electrical Contractor and slowly started to branch off for building electrical systems to building displays and promotional items. I really love this new path that I’m on, I get to help family’s stand out and promote there businesses. In turn they gain new clients and help boost there revenue and continue to expand there reach, its Awesome to see. The creative side to this endeavor of mine is the second most for-filling part of it, I love Problem solving and creative problem solving makes it that much fun.
I see this company continuing to grow to fill that void of bridging that gap between digital and physical. As more of us are moving towards online shopping, the brick and mortar store are starting to feel like a relic of the past. Remember record stores? We use to walk the aisle looking for that Newly released album to see if a copy is available, now it’s just a keystroke away. No one really buys records anymore so how is the industry still booming? Short answer is they adapted, they still sell music but now its packaged in a form of an experience at a concert.
So how does Tierra oso fit into this? We help fill that gap between the product and the experience, when they walk into a brick and mortar its not just a place where they can grab the item they could have easily ordered from amazon but its a place that generates a feeling of longing to come back and or never leaving. Every business is different every location is different, It’s a custom problem that wants to be fixed and I love fixing it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I hate to say this but the lessons from school are the hardest for me to unlearn. I’m sure from that statement you realized I was not a very good student, and I know this is the oldest trope. I know I’m not the only one and I’m sure most of the readers here are the same way. I don’t want to leave you here with just this complaint and not offer you a solution. Here are my top 2 I had to unlearn and what I had to relearn.
We have all been there when your listening to the professor about a lesson that’s so confusing your eyes just glaze over. You look over to your neighbor and ask if you understand and if they do you ask “can you explain it to me”? And like a bird of prey the professor is over your shoulder yelling at the both of you. It get worse if they find out you are asking another student for help. We have been there and it sucks but we learn, we learn to not ask for help, how to ask for help. Inevitably we are trained that asking for help is wrong, its weak, its cheating. STOP this thinking and remember this quote ” somebody knows something”. Problems in your personal life and and business are not unique someone has met them and solved them, learn to overcome this fear.
Learning how to learn. This was a huge obstacle for me, I didn’t know that I had no idea how to learn. This process was not fun for me in the slightest, I didn’t do homework and hardly read any books. Now I read anywhere from 15-20 books a year and pick up things faster in a day than I did a week in grade school. How did i get here? I learned what I needed to let go of and what I needed to add to my daily habits. I learned that I am a very hands on person, I have to feel it and execute the task myself for it to stick in my brain. The lessons don’t have to be exciting or for-filling, the end goal has to be strong enough for you to be disciplined to learn what you need to.
I guess the old question you ask the Professor “how does this help me in the future?” never really resonates with me, the answer was never good enough. Find your reason why and those mountainous problems after much practice just become speed bumps on your path to your goal.
