We recently connected with Rhyan Geiger and have shared our conversation below.
Rhyan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Since I became a dietitian I have always had an interest in recipe creation, blogging, media, and other unconventional routes that a dietitian can play a role in. After passing my credentialing exam I was very interested in pursuing my passion for helping others eat more plant-based foods. But, as most college graduates do I felt I needed to get a job in corporate America to become successful. I had a corporate job for 4 years before deciding to take a risk on having my own business where I encourage plant-based eating through one-on-one coaching, media interviews, brand partnerships, and collaborations. I have now worked for myself since July 2022 and can say it was one of the best choices I’ve made and I have been able to teach so many more people about the benefits of eating plant-based.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Rhyan (rye-ann). I am a registered dietitian and two-time vegan author who specializes in plant-based nutrition. I offer one-on-one nutrition coaching where I teach others how to prevent disease, overcome barriers, and have fun while doing it. Not only do I enjoy working with clients face-to-face but also to provide nutrition education through writing. I partner with nutrition brands and companies to create content for thier social media pages and for employees and consumers in written and video formats.
Promoting plant-based eating in a non-judemental ways is one of the core principles of Phoenix Vegan Dieititan which I try to showcase through media outlets like Women’s Health, Forbes, and Buisness insider article features as well.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Thinking outside the box is one of the best skills for growing a client list. As a new business owner there likely won’t be a line of people knocking at your door so implementing a way to connect with an ideal audience and build trust is one of the best ways. Showing up authentically with good intentions is how I began to build mine. Though my 1:1 client roster isn’t 100% full quite yet and there is room for growth I’d say the client that I’ve had came from building trust with them.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
There aren’t a ton of vegan dietitians in the Phoenix area so building a reputation as a go-to gal for all things plant-based nutrition was a little easier for me at the time because the competition was a little less. Attending events and getting to know others in the community and really making genuine connections have been very impactful in building a reputation locally. Putting in a lot of work and effort to make a reputation takes time and dedication as well as quality products like books and major media features in my case.
