We recently connected with Rhonda Holt and have shared our conversation below.
Rhonda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is based on perspective. Everyone sees it differently. Society tends to brainwash us into thinking that you need certain things in place to define a successful business or relationship. Everyone should examine what success looks like for them. What are your personal wants and needs in life. Do you have a plan? Also it is important to understand that things can change. If you start a path and do not like the way it is going, just change it. Life is fluid. Enjoy the Journey. To me success is enjoying the journey, not the destination.
Rhonda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Rhonda Holt, Owner of Pynk Monky Esthetics and Wellness and Rhonda Holt Wellness. Pynk Monky is a full service spa offering waxing, facials and massage for men and women. Rhonda Holt Wellness has a focus on wellness products and alternative wellness treatments. Both companies focus on self care. If you do not take care of you, then no one else will.
I have always been interested in natural health remedies and alternatives to western medicine. I just followed my interests, pickup up tools along the way and let it grow organically. What sets me apart is that I love to listen, create a safe space for my clients really be a guide, so they are not alone on their self care journey. This makes me proud. We all need money to live, however, my goal is always to be transparent and helpful, that is all.
In my own journey, i have researched and tried so many things. I love learning and becoming a library for clients to ask questions over and over. This journey has also helped me explore creativity in other ways. i have started to explore and enjoy writing, speaking and art. Finding a creative outlet can also be healing and a great stress release.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I love to read and reading books on business have had the biggest impact me as a business owner and growing my business. Here is a list of my favorites that I read over and over.
Thing and Grow Rich, Napolean Hill
Chop Wood Carry Water, Joshua Medcalf
4 Hour Workweek, Timothy Ferris
The Pumpkin Plan, Mike Michalowicz
Uncloned Marketing, Audria Richmond
The Code of the Extraordinary Mind, Vishen Lakhiani
The E-Myth Revisied, Michael E. Gerber
You are a Baddass, Jen Sincero
Unstoppable, Dave Anderson
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I never intended to start a business. When i went to massage school in 2006, my plan was to get a job in a chiropractic office or a spa. During school, i did an internship at a chiropractor and did not enjoy the experience. After school i started doing mobile service. After 6 months, carrying my massage table from home to home was too much, so i rented a space. I still planned on working in a spa, but this was my side hustle until i found a spa home. 3 years later, i was still on my own and outgrew my spa suites 3 times in 3 years. At that time, I also began to grow tired of doing only massage and went to esthetics school. i went to school during the day and worked my clients nights and weekends. By now i realized that i was going to be solo and was starting to enjoy the journey.
After esthetics school, i moved to a larger space to be able to include esthetics. Waxing and facials became my new love. I did all three services, waxing, massage and facials. My husband went to massage school and my daughter went to esthetics school. I went from working solo to a family owned business.
after 10 years in that location, we moved to a bigger space in November 2019 and covid hit in 2020. I was so afraid that this was the end of my business as the world shut down and no one came outside. After covid, our business tripled as everyone was eager to get outside and get pampered. After 3 years we moved again due to building issues. We went from 1 big location into 2 salon suites because we could not find a location that was the right size. After a year, we found our current location, closed the salon suites and moved everyone to our new home.
With all the moving and now the current climate of new government, our sale have dropped and itis like starting over. I am determined to continue to grow.
