We recently connected with Rhodel Rosales and have shared our conversation below.
Rhodel , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
There are things that a parent has to provide: food, shelter, education, and medical. Otherwise, I might as well have been a Tamagotchi.
There are sacrifices: mom didn’t work for more than a decade to take care of me.
There’s hard work: dad worked multiple blue collar jobs at once for us to survive.
I am forever grateful for that.
Our parents were just figuring things out on the fly. They were doing the best they could with what they had whether it be financially or knowledge. I can’t fault them for that. In the grand calculus of my multiverse, they did nothing wrong. It may have seemed wrong at the time, but I am where I am today because of my past and parent’s decision making. Looking back in retrospect, you take a situation that they were in. You call upon that experience when you arrive at that similar fork in the road. You can go left or right. Do it the same or do it differently. Everything my parents did “wrong” was all part of a bigger plan. That’s how I see it.
That was deep. Functional mushrooms are kicking in!

Rhodel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Rhodel Rosales and I have failed at many things. In college, I went from majoring in graphic design, to aspiring physical therapist, to athletic trainer, to kicked out of college. That’s a lot of years of failing. I’ve been a massage therapist since 2009 and have been doing HOME bodywork sessions for almost a decade. Who knows? Give it some time and I could add this to the failure list. But for now, I’m doing ok.
In as little words as possible, my business is “You break. You buy.” You break (not necessarily) your body, you buy my services. I am just one part of the healing process as it is best as a collaborative effort.
I don’t really know what sets me apart from my competitors, but my massage style attracts enough people to stay afloat; probably repels just as many. One thing is certain, you WILL be humbled at some point because you’re not as good as you think. I always look for ways to improve. Maybe that’s why I’m still doing bodywork 15 years and running.
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve made through this industry. And I still get excited to get the opportunity to make someone’s day. Whenever the energy between me and a client connects, it’s just like when the finger points touch in a Dragonball Z fusion dance.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
When you do things for the right reasons and stay true to the game, you will see your business grow. You be you, the right people will like you, and they will spread the gospel about who? You! Word of mouth is the best strategy. I’ve had a website for 4 years. People visit it but rarely follow through with a contact. Don’t think I don’t see your IP addresses!
A better example of word of mouth marketing could be seen with a good friend of mine who has been a massage therapist longer than I have. She’s at that age where doing certain things technologically might be a foreign language. If you’re reading this (the person I’m talking about) I’M SORRY 😂 I’m slightly exaggerating, however, she’s the most successful massage therapist that I personally know. 95.49583727% of her business is from word of mouth and she is definitely a role model in this industry and someone I look up to.
So, do it for the love of the game. Do it from the heart and the people will follow. They will talk about you to others and watch your business grow like a chia pet. The seeds are planted, water it, and watch it bloom.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Going back to where I was speaking about observing my parent’s experiences and making a decision when I come to a similar point, over the years working for other people, you take notes on what works and what drives people crazy. I’ve had bosses who didn’t prioritize the actual thing that the business was about. I’ve worked under someone who saw me as a threat to their own personal clientele, so I got the boot. Your past experiences will shape your management, entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy.
Also, following the titans in your field will help. In my field, I take certain techniques from others and make it my own. Don’t copy it word for word, bar for bar, but you can make it your own. And I hope you get the pop culture references I’ve peppered into this interview.
