Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rhakim Todman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rhakim, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Replace question with “What do you hope your legacy will be?”
Legacy for me is about creating an impact. I hope that my legacy will be to advocate for the respect of engineers. Often engineers do not get the respect or credit that they truly deserve. In my own small way, I started to include my tag “Celeb press da button” as an engineer and it has really taken off. The tag was voiced by a good friend of mine, Anita Maduro. Usually, tags are used by producers. I have a few artists that now remix the tag by directly incorporating it in the intros for their songs. The person I am in my sessions is so bold, energetic, and really speaks to the experience that all artists get as typically, I am a very reserved person but all that changes when I put my headphones on. The energy and passion are undeniable. Two of my main goals with Press Da Button is to give artists the opportunity to really explore their creativity and to expand their sound. Secondly is to educate and encourage other upcoming engineers by creating workshops and panels that would provide the necessary training and resources. I strongly believe in each one teach one.

Rhakim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Music has always been a passion of mine and I have explored music as a musician, artist and now as an audio engineer. I am from the British Virgin Islands. I take a lot of pride in representing my culture well. I currently hold a Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts and Master of Science in Business & Entertainment. I have invested in a lot of time and resources in this field as I continue to diligently work towards my goal. The services Press Da Button provides are recording, mixing and mastering, One of the main things that I reiterate to current new and potential clients is consistent quality is far more valuable than quantity. I use my extensive experience and knowledge to improve and guide artist when necessary. My Passion and value set me apart from others, it is more than just about the money.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
A mix engineered by Press Da Button is always created to top quality. Every artist is treated impartially. An Artist with 200 listeners and an artist with 100,000 listeners receives the same quality of work engineered by PDB. Respect for others, be it the artist or another engineer has helped to build my reputation within my market.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One of my earliest marketing risks, came from merchandise. I printed over 200 t-shirts with the business logo and distributed them to persons in my community and to high schoolers at a local track meet free of cost. This help to launch PDB as a local brand and highlight the services we offer. It was a major risk as it could have been a huge loss in revenue especially at a time where I was just establishing a brand with limited resources.
