We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rezurrection Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rezurrection, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my upcoming final album, ‘George Jones’! It goes against the norms of musical albums by standard! Most albums today, at most, have roughly 10-12 songs on them, where this final album will have more than 30 tracks. This album is me! It highlights all the musicality that I’ve experienced in my walk of life with music. There are classical track all the way to Country tracks on the album with everything in between. This is album is ME! It’s also meaningful because this will be my final project as I’m laying down music to move on to bigger and better things! I want to be more active in my community, and more available for my local church.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
George Jones III, aka Rezurrection (Rez), is a Maryland born Christian hip-hop artist. Now residing in Hampton, GA, Rezurrection is working hard laying down the final ad-libs and finishing touches on his final project, George Jones. If you know anything about Rezurrection, you’ll know his catch phrase, “STAND UP”, which points to a physically and mentally tough time in his life. From 2011 to 2016, Rezurrection endured 8 hip surgeries. With a fake hip on the left and no hip on the right, he moves depend on the Spirit of God knowing he is a walking miracle! Rezurrection is a gifted artist who spits his real-life tales of struggle, pain, addiction, and love into songs that not only teach, but also move the body and soul. Rezurrection works with selected producers and uses real life as inspiration for his lyrics. A gifted live performer, Rezurrection is truly at his best when he is on stage. Rezurrection writes and performs in hope that people will be able to relate to his past and current struggles, knowing that through the Love of Christ, we can all overcome! The last few years have challenged us all. But as we know, there can be joy mixed with sorrow. In 2020, Rez’s single, “Preach It Right” reached #23 on the BDS gospel internet charts by Nielsen, (now known as laminates); and in 2021, the single “Chainz” ft. Erica Mason reached #1 on the same Gospel Charts. “Chainz,” an anthem song that reminds us the Lord has removed the chains of sin in our lives, is still currently charting at #21 on the Christian hip-hop charts. Both of these songs were produced by Sam Peezy, who is a top and highly sought after producer in the genre. Rez is looking forward to highlighting his unique sound and adding a new flavor to his final project, George Jones, “I want to give everything I have and want to go out with a bang. This project is going to be a mix of musical genres and sure to hit from classical to country.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When I first started music, I sided on the side of what do people want to hear? Or, “what’s in trend?” That drove my inspiration for music. And yes, I’ve had some success following that method. I wasn’t happy though. I had lost the touch of ministering through the music and being there for the people. This time on the final journey people will get the full dose of who I am and the music I love! I feel that listeners will get the full spectrum of my music background that ranges from Classical, Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, Gospel, Marching Band, Trap, and Country! I’m really excited for everyone to hear this final album.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
If people know me, that know that I have a catch phrase of “STAND UP!” That’s due to the biggest resilience thus far in my life I would say. Long story short, I was diagnosed with bi-lateral avascular necrosis of my hips in 2005. That means that the main artery that brings blood to my hip joint area was failing to do so causing my femur heads to die in the process. This brought lots of pain and would eventually lead me to having my hips replaced. Between 2011 to 2016, I endured 8 total hip replacements. 2 on the left and 6 on the right. In 2015, I was told I’d never walk again after losing my right hip. I pretty much gave up on life and got even more addicted to the pain medicine I was on by shooting it into my veins. That ultimately led to heroine. My life was in shambles and my marriage was pretty much over. If it hadn’t be for God and His grace and mercy in my life, I probably would have od’d and died. But He showed up and healed me from my addiction and I began to walk again overnight! From then on, my faith and resiliency was elevated because I had no doubt He was with me.
