We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reyna Torres. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reyna below.
Hi Reyna, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It all started with my first business, I sold prescription glasses because my profession was an optician. Having several years of experience in that filed, I decided to start my own. When I was 22 years old I told myself that I wanted to run my own place but I also understood that I had no idea what I wanted to sell or do. So as the years went by and I was in the Optical Industry I decided to open my own store, OptopusGlasses. I learn a lot about opening a physical place not easy and it’s a lot harder when you have no support from family. The business was doing amazing but I knew deep in my heart that something was missing. Having my own business selling glasses wasn’t exactly what I wanted. Being in charge and making the decision was great, but something wasn’t right. Then 2020 hit hard for all small business, The business went under and I lost everything. I was forced to re-think what I wanted to do. So one day I went to Walmart they had a deal for a Cannon camera and I said to myself to learn and create. I never knew that I was a natural. Then the artist in me started to open up. I was in a whole new world understanding this industry and understanding this new Reyna. I was so happy and I knew this was what I wanted, I was a creator, story teller, a visionary. I wanted to open up peoples mind and push my limits. So I created Women Creating Magic pod cast.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ll start with what I’m most proud of because that’s how I feel now and day’s. I’m proud that this single mother of four (and 3 of my kids were diagnosed with autism) was able to start her business not just once but twice and found her calling. It’s not easy to follow your dream when there’s so much you have to be responsible for. Im proud to be a women that is continuing to strive and work hard for what I believe in. I love creating a positive and vibrant environment when shooting my photogaphy and it goes the same for my pod cast Women Creating Magic. I still can’t believe that I was able to shoot up to four seasons with ten episode of my show Women Creating Magic, with incredible and talented women. Talking about what pushed us to become the women we are today and what we struggle on our everyday life, what people think they know about us but in reality we as women are constantly thinking about 100 different outcomes and what we have to handle. I always lead with my guest asking them this question, “I bet you go to bed and instead of actually sleeping, you end up thinking about what’s going to happen the next day or anything that’s delaying you or even the dishes weren’t washed and if you even have enough time to do them” we as women are complex we have so many layers of emotions and thoughts. The podcast is about letting everyone know especially women that we go through similar situation. I also end my show with the last question “what helps you stay focus and stay positive”. Letting the viewers know that you can try the guest methods to stay positive & it may work for them.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
The love of my life is my business partner also the reason to why I switch careers. We met in Facebook I had just open up my first business and I needed to boost my follower on Facebook. Anthony my partner in crime, had a mutual friend and I told myself to Strat following him so he’ll follow you back. Which he did, and he also asked me why. I told him I need more followers lol. We started to talk and one thing led to another and we became best friends, business partners and now in the near future husband and wife. He was my reason to create, that you can make living out of it. There was no shame doing it because his mother supported him being a writer/director. I never had that type of support and being with him and having his support help grow the artist inside me. Now we are in a whole new venture and about to start our production studio May Films. The next step for both of us in our journey. Side note how we came up with our company name, I was pregnant and unfortunately I had a miss carriage, it happens int he month of May. So when we were thinking about what should we name our production company we said May.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Saying yes all the time!!!! You would be surprised how hard it is to say no. I had to unlearn saying yes. I work all my life in customer services and saying yes or we’ll make sure to make this happened was force in my system especially when your hispanic and that’s what your parents expect you to say is YES! It wasn’t easy to say NO it was very difficult for me, but I understood that this wasn’t someone else’s business this was mine and I had to step out of pleasing others and making the right decision, & that required me saying no a lot and knowing when it was the right time to say yes. Now and day’s it’s easy and it feel good.
