We were lucky to catch up with Rey Carrasquel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I am a self thought artist ,
I’ve always loved art since I was a kid , so I practice and practice until I found my voice , I was all over the place at the beginning,, but the constant practicing is how I got faster to my still .
In my case I am an emotional artist so passion is my major skill mixed up with a world of colorful possibilities., see, I have to feel something to create something , so I’d say burning passion is my major skill .
Reality often stands in your way , when you are an artist ,creativity is something larger than yourself , is something you brought back from a world of inspiration, we artists see reality though a different filter and sometimes , coping with reality could be a but hurtful
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The name is Rey Carrasquel, I am a Venezuelan visual artist and poet based in Baltimore city, i had left my country to escape political repression, extreme food and medicine shortage, and general economic collapse , I am currently under refugee status.
Art is my true world, I became an artist as a sort of a way to deal with depression and loneliness, trying to transform my pain and the hardships of an immigrant life into something powerful and somewhat positive, also i’m trying to give this city a voice through my art, poems and photography based on my experiences living here
I am a digital artist also a poet and a photographer, I think I can describe my art as pop gothic, a fuse between Francis Bacon, Basquiat, pop culture, and Edgar Allan Poe, i describe myself as sort of like a Happy charming colorful goth, I am currently most known from my digital art, although I won a couple poetry competitions in Spain, and I had some poems published, there, I’ve been in numerous art exhibits here in Baltimore and also my art was displayed on a led billboard once and also i won a 3rd place in a short film festival some time ago
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
, I am very proud on my unique style that gives my art depth and personality almost like every piece has a light and a dark side not in terms of colors but character, deep art with attitude , The most rewarding thing for me , is people finding themself into something I’ve created , it feels sort of like you are creative a new world for them to feel comfortable and escape reality a little bit , to see them relating and reacting , is my reward
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
talking about existentialism, Nietzsche, the poetry of Bukowski ,Ernest Becker’s the denial of death, the hardships of life ,on a cold winter night makes me immensely happy , I find passion on that ,these are people that created thing that outlived them , and that’s what I really want to achieve , to create great things that outlived me,
