We recently connected with Rex Andrews and have shared our conversation below.
Rex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Let me tell you a quick story about the time we spent $32,000 on a marketing system that didn’t work and I almost gave up on my business.
At the time, my business partner, Jonathan Canales, and I were trying to grow our coaching business, Pathway Fitness, to be able to help more men take control of their fitness.
But, like a lot of business owners, we were struggling to reach more people with our marketing, and we were limited with the amount of space we had in the gym. We knew we had to find a way to serve people outside of the people who just lived right next to the gym.
I was getting more and more worried that financially, we weren’t going to be able to continue if things kept going the way they were. Which meant, We wouldn’t be able to help the people that we were so passionate about coaching.
Then the bottom fell out from under us when we invested in a marketing system that was “best practices” for gyms. This system was making more 7-figure gyms all over the country than any other system out there.
Over the course of 6 months we spent $32,000 on this system that produced next to zero results for us. We kept hoping that the next week would be the week when things turned around, but it never did.
The system worked for other people, but it didn’t work for us. It wasn’t how we serve people and it wasn’t our message, but we felt stuck after making such a huge investment, we almost gave up on our vision of the system we know helps busy guys get back in shape better than anything else.
It got so bad, we started worrying about how we were going to pay our bills. We had 5 employees, and if we couldn’t get more people in the door to be able to serve them, Pathway was going to have to close up shop.
As you can imagine, I was in bad shape and desperate, but I wasn’t ready to give up on my dream of helping the busy guy be able to make fitness happen for him.
Then I discovered the system that really worked for us. We just started focusing on helping more. When we started offering as much free information as possible through our Podcast, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, suddenly the right guys were raising their hands saying they wanted to work with us.
Ultimately, this led us to publish our first book “Executing Fitness Success: The Busy Man’s Playbook To Getting Back In Shape Fast” which was an Amazon best-seller.
Instead of us investing thousands of dollars on ads and marketing that left us feeling like we were cheesy salesmen, we were spending next to nothing on marketing and had more clients than ever.
At that point, everything changed!
I finally figured out how to help busy guys make fitness work for them in an easy-to-apply, repeatable process. I got the confidence to go all-in on what it takes to serve our clients better, and the system I know works. And it forced me to set ambitious goals that I could hold myself accountable to ( the same thing we were working with our clients on the day-to-day basis)
Because we decided to go all-in on giving as much value to our audience as we could, we were able to consistently show up for our clients on a whole new level. We were able to serve more men than just the guys in our local area. And we were able to push our business to go after bigger and bigger goals.
Now I’m living my dream of helping the busy guy be able to make fitness happen for him and I never have to worry about being able to serve my clients ever again.
Rex, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a co-founder of Pathway Training, a private training facility in Porter, TX founded in 2018.
I’ve coached business executives, Ironman athletes, entrepreneurs, marathon champions, stay-at-home parents, and everyone in between. Ultimately, it’s always been about the same focus—long-term sustainable fitness changes.
With our flagship program, The Pathway Challenge, we’ve specialized in helping busy, career-driven, family men find a way to balance pursuing their health and personal goals with the demands of a stressful life.
I’m a former internationally-touring professional wrestler who has been coaching fitness for 11 years. In 2015, I was the head coach at The Great Khali’s Pro Wrestling School in Punjab, India. In 2017, I brought 2x WWE Hall of Famer Booker T out of retirement for one more match.
I completed the Houston Marathon in 2020, I have a black belt in American Taekwondo. I’m a certified personal trainer, a sports performance specialist, and a corrective exercise specialist. My major focus at Pathway is on fitness program design.
My wife Dr. Taylor Andrews and I enjoy traveling, hiking, and tennis. We live in Kingwood, TX, with our Dalmatian, Rockso.
At Pathway, we offer fitness, nutrition and performance coaching and resources to help guys make fitness happen.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think honesty is the biggest thing. I think our clients and our market can tell that we’re honestly trying to help as much as we can first. That’s the most important thing for us.
We honestly under charged a lot as we were establishing our footing because we always wanted to over deliver to our clients as much as possible. We wanted them to feel like they got ten times what they paid for in our coaching program.
For anyone to leave feeling disappointed was the last thing we wanted. That’s why we have so many amazing reviews and we’ve built a tight community with our clients because they see that we’re in the trenches with them.
We know getting healthy isn’t an easy task, and if you’re willing to do the work at least we can help you figure it out.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Sometimes people think fitness is about being the biggest and baddest. Like, your job as a coach is to be the most intimidating, badass athlete you can be. If that’s you, that’s great. But, at the end of the day, most people just want to be healthier, and they need to know how they can exercise and eat to feel good and get the most out of life. Not to be a bodybuilder.
So I think a lot of it comes down to having empathy for your clients. Being able to communicate with someone and understand what they’re struggling with and help them find the best way for them to make this work in their lives.
