ReShunda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I can say my work ethic was instilled in me as a child from my parents. Growing up, they always emphasized the importance of dedication, persistence, and doing your best no matter what! While working full time jobs, they managed to strategically start a church which impacted countless lives in the community. I watched them serve tirelessly with so much dedication and compassion. I consistently noticed how they balanced their personal lives and spiritual commitment with such excellence and efficiency. This inspired me to do the same in all aspects of my life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My cosplay name is Shundialaine and I am a new up- and- coming cosplayer. For me, cosplaying is a way to escape some of the realities of life. I have always loved dressing up since I was toddler. I am fascinated by becoming these whimsical characters in exciting worlds that are far different than my own world. During a rough time in my life, I regained intertest into anime. Through anime, I became aware of the world of cosplay. I was very much inspired seeing how people were bringing to life these characters.
I also reconnected with a former classmate of mines, by the name of Chocolate Cheri’e Delight, who gave me a firsthand look into cosplaying. Chocolate Cheri’e Delight has been one of my biggest cheerleaders and mentors throughout my learning process as a cosplayer. She has encouraged me to put myself out there in the cosplay community. Her encouragement was one of the catalysts that catered to my growth and healing. My first cosplay photoshoot was very inspiring and uplifting. Chocolate Cheri’e Delight later introduced me to other great cosplayers and photographers that welcomed and motivated me to cultivate my talent and become a better cosplayer. Cosplay allows me to express myself while becoming a part of a larger, passionate community that celebrates everyone creativity.
Since beginning my cosplay journey, I am most proud to say I have been published 3 times so far in the Creative Cosplay Magazine and Coplay Society Magazine. The feedback I have received has been great and has encourage me to continue growing and showcasing my work to the world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My cosplay journey is a celebration of self-expression, confidence, and diversity. As an African – American plus-size woman, I aim to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and prove that cosplay is for everyone—regardless of size, race, or body type. Through my creativity and passion, I want to inspire others to embrace their favorite characters without fear of judgment. My mission is to uplift and support fellow cosplayers, foster inclusivity in the community, and show that beauty and authenticity come in all forms. Cosplay is about joy, artistry, and representation, and I am here to take up space, unapologetically and proudly.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Cosplay is for everyone, regardless of size, race, or gender, and embracing diversity enhances the fandom experience. It is very pivotal that that the cosplay community has a way to build a thriving creative ecosystem that supports each individual uniqueness and creativity. Our society must continue to prioritize inclusivity, respect different artistic recognition, and foster community building. In addition, many aspiring cosplayers face financial barriers such as high cost of materials for costumes, convention fees, and travel expenses. These barriers can be addressed through grants, sponsorships, and platforms that help cosplayers monetize their craft. It’s very imperative people recognize cosplay as an art form through media representation, workshops, and industry collaborations to elevates its legitimacy. Giving cosplay the same level of artistic respect as fashion design, film costume design, and performance art can elevate its status and encourage more opportunities for creatives in the field. Most importantly, fostering a positive community with constructive feedback, safe online spaces, and mental health support ensures that cosplay remains a welcoming and empowering space for all.
