We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reshaunna Austin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Reshaunna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Yes, I take vacations. Vacations are essential to rejuvenating and feeling whole again, which is necessary to keep the business afloat and be able to provide the services that our customers need. Vacations do not always need to be expensive and time-consuming. Driving an hour to the next town to get away and relax is sometimes all the business owner needs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Reshaunna Austin. I sell hair care products, with hair oils being the most popular. I got into selling hair care because of the many questions I used to, and still get, about my hair growing quick and thick. Before sharing my product with the market, I used to make my hair oil and shampoo, mainly because I was interested in becoming an herbalist.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I have learned to be humble and listen to what the customers are saying. Being humble has taught and allowed me to build connections and meaningful relationships with the community, especially the customers. Learning to be humble has also helped me to intentionally relish self-growth, happiness, positive emotions or affirmations, self-awareness, and well-being as an individual and for my business.
Any advice for managing a team?
The best advice for managing a team is to loosen up. I always tell people, the individuals they work with are like your second family and should be treated as such. It is understood that even families do not always get along, but to have an understanding, of coming together and putting aside differences to reach the common goal, is powerful.
Maintaining high morale is all about understanding that you never know what a person a going through. As a manager or business owner, it is critical to make sure that our team feels valued and essential and that the company cares about their well-being.
