We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reneka Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Reneka, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I am an entrepreneur with multiple businesses, but in all that I have my hand in, they are all in agreement with THE mission: to encourage and help bring out the BEST in individuals both inward and outward. It’s truly not enough to just ‘look’ good but to feel and embody it. I’ve learned you have to continue to show up for yourself, because who else will if not you? My clients and network are an extension of myself, and I hold that in the highest regard.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Born and raised in the small town of Franklin, La., I had humble beginnings but knew that I was destined for more. Since my adolescence, I always felt connected to the arts: fashion, theatre, dance, and music. Anything out of the entertainment umbrella, you couldn’t and still can’t find me in. My journey into the fashion industry led me to Dallas, Tx. where I became an accredited Fashion Designer and Stylist. With my creativity and skills acquired through experiences, I’ve been able to build my brand Opulent Manner to one that speaks to how my customers want to feel, think, and do. A company that gives you opulence, quality, and a reminder that wealth is in you and on you. Our slogan is “BIGmanner™️ nothing less”, which is a way in which an individual expresses oneself with considerable importance and confidence.
Now back in Louisiana, I can share the taste of the Fashion high and give back, while offering my wardrobe styling services, clothing, and more all over the United States. I’m grateful for my supporters and clients. It’s so rewarding to see my clients and customers’ confidence transform and look at me as an extension of their family. That’s what it’s all about. Truly making everyone I connect with feel welcomed and more confident.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back in early 2019, I decided I wanted to officially get my LLC for Elle Est Designs, but had no real business plan on how I would grow it nor understand the legalities. Moving forward to mid-year, I decided to get t-shirts produced and custom work to sell at my launch party. Though I had a great turnout at the launch party, sales weren’t where I needed them nor did I have a market strategy to truly push sales. Then COVID happened, which completely halted my creativity and energy to move forward, and I felt like I had a complete loss both financially and mentally. It was a reality check that I needed to pace myself and build a solid game plan and foundation. So, I started going to free seminars, joined classes to sharpen my trade as well as business knowledge, found my circle of support, and started paying it forward to help me become a smarter and sharper businesswoman. From that, I’ve learned what not to do and am aware of what I need to do to grow. From that experience, I was able to rebrand into Opulent Manner. Always remember to give yourself grace and that it is not a race but a marathon.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I’ve worked in retail and the fashion industry for over 10+ years; however, If I knew what I know now, I could have been in 6+ figures in my business.
Here are a few resources I wish I had known earlier in my creative journey:
1. There are grants available based on different requirements/categories (woman-owned, black-owned, etc)
2. There’s free guidance out there such as the Small Business Development Center (SBDC)
3. Join Chamber of Commerce for networking and tips
4. Some banks offer certain incentives, etc.
5. Join groups that encourage your creativity and expand your wealth of knowledge
6. YOU DON’T HAVE TO USE YOUR OWN MONEY TO FUND YOUR BUSINESS
Also, never be shy to ask for help or mentorship.
