We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Renee Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Renee below.
Alright, Renee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Before embarking on my creative career, I spent nearly 15 years in corporate America. Eventually, I realized that I was no longer fulfilled by my work and had been pursuing my creative passions on the side. When I found myself dedicating more time and energy to my passion than to my corporate job, I knew it was time to make a change.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a self-taught fashion designer with over 20 years of experience. My cultural background is what initially got me started in this industry. I am Liberian and growing up, I was constantly surrounded by our ethnic garments, which were traditionally reserved for special events and occassions. I wanted to be able to adorn our African fabrics and designs in everyday wear. My brand, Ethyl B, specializes in custom garments featuring Ankara fabrics, though I also work with standard fabrics. The brand is named after my daughter, Blythe (her name spelled backward), as her style and creativity are the primary inspirations for my designs.
Five years ago, I transformed my passion into a profitable venture by establishing my LLC. While my line primarily caters to women, I’ve recently expanded to include collections for men and children.
I am proud to create unique designs that resonate with people and reflect their individuality. It is incredibly fulfilling to see my creations come to life and be worn by others. I’m also proud to promote diversity and inclusivity in fashion. Designing clothes that celebrate different cultures, body types, and backgrounds is a significant achievement for me.
Some key aspects I want potential clients to know about my work include my signature style of combining Ankara fabrics with standard materials such as denim or camouflage. In addition, all my garments are handmade by me, showcasing my meticulous craftsmanship and ensuring high-quality finishes in every piece.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are many rewarding aspects of being a creative professional. The freedom to express myself without limitations is incredibly fulfilling, and creating fashion allows me to communicate my thoughts, emotions, and perspectives in a uniquely personal way. Staying true to my vision and values while crafting original pieces is deeply satisfying. The ability to experiment, innovate, and push boundaries fuels my creativity and keeps my work exciting. The creative process offers endless possibilities and exploration, making each design and concept a thrilling journey. Ultimately, doing what I love and am passionate about brings immense satisfaction, transforming work into a fulfilling journey rather than just a job.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are several resources I wish I had known about earlier in my creative journey. As a self-taught designer, I never took any formal courses in fashion and merchandising. Access to that information earlier would have been incredibly helpful, as it could have significantly aided in branding and marketing my designs and products more efficiently.
