We recently connected with Renee Lanz and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Renee, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
1000% couldn’t be happier to be a hair and makeup artist! I am so thankful to be my own boss. The last 5 years of my business have been so rewarding but after finding out I was pregnant last year and now being a Mom for the last 8 months, have been life changing and I am very grateful to work on my own terms to spend as much time as I can with my daughter.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the hair and airbrush makeup artist you book when you want to elevate your natural look for any event! I absolutely love helping my clients feel amazing with neutral tones and soft glam. A good portion of my clients don’t typically wear a lot of makeup, but understand that they need a little more than usual for photos on their big day, so they hire me!
I started my company in 2019 and when COVID hit, it was a challenge because I couldn’t work. Thankfully after a few months, couples were tired of waiting to marry their best friend so I was booked and busy for the rest of the year!
I was a bride myself in 2022 and that really helped me be a better business owner and have an understanding with what my brides are going through, with planning a wedding. If you need to vent about it in my chair, I will be a listening ear!!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my career is helping women see how beautiful they are and the connections I have made throughout the last 5 years in this business! Whether it’s a photographer, a client, another stylist, and all the referrals from past clients, I am truly so thankful for each person I have met along the way!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being a business owner and getting through COVID was rough. Those first few months, all of my clients were cancelling and postponing their weddings but none of us knew how long it was really going to last. Not knowing when I would get to work or get paid again was scary but I’m so glad I didn’t give up and I continued to pursue makeup or else I wouldn’t be doing what I love, 4 years later and I wouldn’t have had all my past client’s in my chair!
