We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Renee Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Renee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
Covid-19 has allowed me to broaden my product base. We started out selling Press-On nails at the beginning of Covid-19 and now we’ve added Cuticle Oils to our product line, that come in six different scents: Honey & Shea, Mango, Bubblegum, Cotton Candy, Malibu Baby and Cookie Dough. And they all smell AMAZING!
Renee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! My name’s Renee, and most people call me Bubbles, I’m the owner of Nailz by Bubblez. I’m located in Sunrise, Fl and I specialize in Acrylics and Nail Art.
I officially got started by attending and receiving my license at Margate School of Beauty. I’ve been doing nails for a little over 13 years both part-time and full-time. I’ve worked in a few salons but have always been an entrepreneur and had personal clients where I would make house calls on the weekends.
As a child growing up in Jamaica, I would visit my grandma’s house on the weekends and pretend I was doing myAunt’s and Grandma’s pedicure, so finding out that I did become one was no surprise to her at all.
I’m most proud of my growth in the business. Never did I ever think I would be creating and selling customized press-on nails and cuticle oils. My work is done with perfection as the goal, I assure you that any service/product you purchase from me is made with a passion.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
COVID-19! The past few years have truly taught me about the importance of pivoting. When we had to shut down because of Covid-19, I had to find another way to earn my additional income. And so I decided to start making press-on nails. Covid has taught me that you have to be ok with change and to be able to think on your feet.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
My cuticle oils are all made in house, but finding the perfect bottle for them took a while. In anything I do, I try to be different and with that I didn’t want to use the cuticle oil bottles that I saw that were already on the market. I need to know that when you look at my product you’ll never forget my name, because it stood out so much to you.
Finding the manufacturer for the bottle was a bit tedious, because I needed something that could hold my logo and ingredients on it and most importantly something on brand. I was able to find bottles overseas that were cute but nothing that could fit my logo.
The bottle I decided on I think is perfect. It goes with the theme of pink, could hold the logo and provides a box for the oil that would include the ingredients.
