We were lucky to catch up with Renee Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Renee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve always had an interest in art and knew when I was in high school that all I wanted to do was create. I took as many art classes as I could and then went on to take fine art painting in jr. college and eventually went to art school. I learned so much in the classroom, both from teachers and from being with other creatives, but as an artist, you also learn and become better through experimentation and simply creating. I learn something with almost every painting I complete. There is a lot of learning through failure with art, as well, but it’s essential to keep trying so you know what works for you and what doesn’t. I also think being an artist is such a unique journey. Painting was what I always wanted to do, but I didn’t stick with it and took about a ten-year hiatus, I just didn’t make time for it and eventually I missed it so much, so I had to fit it back into my life. In many ways I was my own obstacle, but I eventually found my way back and now I paint every chance I get.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Art and creating have always been part of who I am. I grew up in a really small farm town in Iowa, where I could roam freely and constantly use my imagination. I am inspired by those days of exploring and nature is my muse. I started painting in high school and first learned how to oil paint in jr. college. Oil has been my favorite medium since. I seek to paint calming scenes that might take you to a place where you can settle and take a breath. I am thankful for the creative gift I have been given and it brings me so much joy to share it with others.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There is nothing more rewarding that seeing how your art makes another person feel. Creating artwork is a very personal process, but when you see how another person connects to your work and when it brings them joy, there really is nothing better.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
As we are all online more and more, I truly believe it is so important to hold on to the tangible. I think it’s necessary for us to thrive, I don’t think we were meant to be on a screen so much. Art is simply better in person and it brings people together. As an artist, I appreciate events that seek to both support artists and their work, and I also think that the human connection is important for both the artist and the viewer.
